DC mayor calls in National Guard ahead of pro-Trump protests

By ASHRAF KHALIL and LOLITA C. BALDORJanuary 4, 2021

Because D.C. does not have a governor, the designated commander of the city’s National Guard is Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy. Any D.C. requests for Guard deployments have to be approved by him.

The Army Secretary also noted that he is required to work through Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller to get final approval to mobilize national guard troops and work in coordination with local authorities.

Less than a day before she joined the Trump loyalist protest, Babbitt, an avowed and public Trump supporter as well as a subscriber to a number of alt-right conspiracy theories, had vowed the insurrectionist movement could never be halted. “Nothing will stop us … they can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours … dark to light!” she wrote on Twitter.

Babbitt, 35, was reportedly shot as she and other rioters tried to break through a barricaded door in the building where Capitol police officers were armed on the other side.

Babbitt was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound but later pronounced dead.

On Twitter, Babbitt described herself as a veteran and a libertarian. Her social media account is filled with declarations of support for Trump and condemnation of November’s presidential election, which Trump lost.

She also retailed many of the conspiracy theories shared by alt-right groups, including one about a vast network of high-profile and powerful paedophiles. Babbitt regularly retweeted controversial lawyer and conspiracy theorist Lin Wood, a high-profile Trump supporter who has litigated several of the president’s failed lawsuits contesting the election result.
Maybe here.

motivation for trump to let this happen? I have no idea, but if there was someone/thing behind this, i can't imagine anyone else being capable, besides trump

Trump is President for 13 more days. He has shown himself to be dangerous and delusional. Our focus must remain on him, first and foremost.

I could not follow your explanation. Something about some of those in Congress and some of those in law enforcement letting this happen so as to silence Trump once and for all?

Aren't you overlooking that Trump lit the fuse for what happened?

His motto has always been "Might Makes Right" so perhaps he was throwing his final "Hail Mary" hoping that something good would come of it. If not, then it was just his last chance to try and punish those that didn't stand with him. Since he couldn't do that individually he did it collectively via the disruption to the entire Congressional proceedings. It's just Trump trying to even the score. That is one of his biggest motivators and probably one that drives him daily as his time winds down. He always acts and never considers the consequences of his actions. Who benefits? In Trump's twisted mind... he does.

I will admit that it is f*cked up as to how the Capitol was so easily breached and I do want to understand the story behind that. I'm willing to be open to how that story unfolds but the person ultimately responsible for what has occurred is Trump. A concession speech weeks ago would have averted all of this and we wouldn't be asking these questions.

The security failure at the Capitol should — and will be — examined/investigated.

The role of Trump inciting this riot/insurrection by his supporters should not be pushed to the side. He spoke to this crowd using incendiary language just before they marched down to the Capitol. I watched and listened to it on television. He urged them to go to the Capitol. Actually said he would be walking along with them (of course he did not do that). He had repeatedly urged his supporters to come to DC on January 6, said it would be “wild.” While the storming of the Capitol was in full swing, playing out on live television in front of a stunned and horrified  nation, he remained silent for hours before putting out a short video on Twitter saying they should go home but also stating they had a right to be angry because the election had been stolen from them. Then he followed that up with a tweet saying this is what you get when you steal an election.

These were the actions and words of the President. They should be first and foremost in our minds. Full stop.

But I also say if a team of white folks had randomly attacked the capital on any other day, they would have faced the same.

Wow, I have to spell it out for you. This poorly planned and thought out event was a golden opportunity for Congress and the alphabet agencies to orchestrate and allow operatives and true protesters to waltz into places that they could have easily prevented them from doing so creating the environment to get Trump to finally concede and remove his power and influence to facilitate an orderly transition of power and silence Trump once and for all. These are the same tactics used in the BLM protest when operatives, some police, some FBI and some Antifa were caught on film perpetuating the violence and even providing cases of bricks strategically placed in hot spot locations. They were successful. I cannot believe you would be so naive to think that protestors could just waltz into the capitol so easily without inside assistance and coordination. Quite frankly I cannot believe I am having to spell this out for you and I have nothing more to say about it. You believe what you like, neither of us have any power to do anything about it anyway.

All I can say is WOW... that is a pretty wild fairy-tale that you concocted. You mean some members of Congress orchestrated this knowingly putting themselves in harm's way in an effort to hurt Trump with the end game being him conceding an orderly transition? 🤣 That is some wild shit there bro.

If there was anybody behind a dangerous half-baked scheme like this then my money's on Trump... not Congress.
