His father just died, complications from Corona. He's also newly unemployed..
I'm not going to ask how he feels about it now. I can't kick him while he's down. But goddamn, some people learn hard.
Sorry to see this, M...My condolences to your friend. Unfortunately, I fear, his story will be repeated time and time again in the coming months.

Damn. That's hard to hear.
And, I agree completely with the "don't kick someone while they're down" feeling, and wonder how it is that there's a subgroup of our society that doesn't have that ethos. Sandy Hook deniers come to mind.

That's the most painful thing I've read all week. If you're healthy and safe, this pandemic is like being in a drawn-out David Lynch or Coen brothers movie. But then you read about things like what happened to your friend and his family and you realize how crushing this is.
Most of the people here, including myself, were caught flat-footed when it came to stocking up and staying home. Last weekend I was walking around in the DC neighborhood where the Obamas live (as do Jared and Ivanka). You normally never see people there but the sidewalks were filled with couples, parents and babies, knots of friends all strolling around. It gradually dawned on over this week them that they have to stay at home. One day the supermarkets are a bit under-stocked; two days later and they look like the Dothraki had swept through.
Repeated crises have shown that government is rarely, if ever, fully prepared. Nor is government as flexible as it needs to be to respond as quickly or creatively as conditions often demand. Many factors contribute to what appear to be chronic weaknesses that can compound problems and reduce public confidence. Lessons learned after the fact solve past problems without necessarily anticipating future ones.
...
The country and its leaders were caught off guard when terrorists on hijacked airplanes attacked the homeland on Sept. 11, 2001. The financial crisis of 2008, which turned into a deep recession, forced drastic, unprecedented action by a government struggling to keep pace with the economic wreckage. The devastation from Hurricane Andrew in Florida in 1992 and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 exposed serious gaps in the governmentâs disaster response and emergency management systems.
But Trump failed to prepare the country for this crisis and seems to be repeatedly behind the curve in realizing what he should do. Pelosi and Mnuchin were far more involved than Trump in hammering out a stimulus package, and Trump is fount of bad information. He's making a bad situation worse, but his government is beginning to pull in the right direction.
But that doesn't make the death of your friend's father any less tragic.

Liberia currently has the capacity to treat about 30 COVID-19 patients at a designated facility, according to Nagbe, while other sites have been identified for reconditioning should the need arise.
Nagbe said there is just one ventilator in the country, located at a hospital outside of the capital operated by rubber company Firestone.
