Facing the music (accountability) requires one essential ingredient: reality.

When the going gets tough, the "tough" desire good news (while blaming bad news for the tough going).

Kurt...
So, what do you say Americans who are scared, I guess? Nearly 200 dead and 14,000 who are sick and millions as you witness who are scared right now, what do you say to Americans who are watching you right now who are scared?

Trump: I say that you are a terrible reporter, that's what I say. I think it's a very nasty question. I think it's a very bad signal that you are putting out to the American people. They're looking for answers and they're looking for hope. And you're doing sensationalism and the same with NBC and Concast — I don't call it Comcast I call it Concast. Let me just, who do you work, let me just say something. That's really bad reporting. And you ought to get back to reporting instead of sensationalism. Let's see if it works. It might and it might not. I happen to feel good about it, but who knows? I've been right a lot.

Kurt..there is another choice

"I've never seen anything like this, and we're going to do everything in our power to minimize the loss
of life."

The economic talk will take care of itself.

What you can't do is tell people "we've got it under control", "it's a hoax", "it'll be gone by April", and then turn around and say "we were on top of it","we did a lot early", "I'm giving my performance a 10 out of 10 because I did everything right".

If he would just once say "I was wrong"....it would do wonders.

There are also some just plain odd things he is doing.  He has war powers now, and can focus US companies on specific tasks.  Instead, he's making state governments search for vendors, negotiate pricing, and organize deliveries.  He should just say "GM...you build ventilators".  Tesla...print masks.

The last comment....he needs to stop planning for a miracle.   There will be drugs, and when they're available things we get better, but until then he should assume the worst and plan accordingly.

EDIT:  This just in...we're within 570 cases of second place...move over Italy.  We'll take down the Chinese tomorrow!!!  We're number 1, we're number 1 !!!  Of the recovered...we're at a whopping 619.  C'mon Easter!

Trump himself is talking as if we are approaching a bat turn. I and others react to his mixed-messaging on matters of duration and progress. For example, it was  just a week or so ago that he was saying it might be July or August. Now he is saying he would like to see us begin coming out of the social distancing and get back to work by Easter. He has been a fount of misinformation. I criticize him for that. When he said several times in January and February that it was “under control,” what did he mean? How should that have been received?  There is no question that the country was not prepared for this. No question that testing lagged significantly till essentially now. No question that there have been PPE and ventilator shortages. Yet he kept saying he and his administration were on top of it. In sum, he brings the criticism on himself because he has been claiming things to be so that were not so.

In other good news you may have missed ...

University of Minnesota researcher touts makeshift $150 ventilator to treat coronavirus

The researchers developed the mechanical ventilator as a compact device the size of a cereal box that does not require pressurized oxygen or air supply, unlike commercially available mechanical ventilators. According to a website dedicated to the device, dubbed the “Coventor,” in collaboration with the university and local industry leaders, the researchers acquired the necessary components to assemble thousands of ventilators per week, with all of them currently shipping from Minneapolis.

Kurtster, I am afraid that I think the ship has sailed.

The whole point about exponential growth is that a tiny restriction early on can have huge implications later on. The failure to aggressively combat the first cases is very much a factor in the steepness of the current growth curve in the US. Sure this is not just Trump's fault. I see it as indicative of a much wider cultural attribute that makes the US particularly prone to this epidemic. Europe likewise lacked the experience of dealing with recent epidemics and this resulted in an explosion of cases, particularly in those countries with strong ties within extended families, like Spain and Italy.

The US might not have such strong family ties, but what it does have is a large number of people who can't accept the magnitude of the problem, or do so at a delay, seeing it as something fundamentally foreign and not something the US is prey too. Everything Trump said at the beginning of the crisis is an example of this very attitude. He was by no means not the only one. But all who thought like him are a part of the current problem.

This is not an attack. Please print out your post —just this one should do it— and take it to a counselor and ask that person what they think.
Also, please scroll past the tire fire from yesterday to the post where I responded to yours about the 45-minute rapid test etc. Maybe we can get another reset on this forum. I got a bit of clarification that the information I had came from the governor, not the EMT. I didn't get any answer about the cost but he said the tests are on the way. So in a week or so we'll find out how expensive they are, how many they got, etc.

edit: There are several competing tests coming online rapidly. Your friend's may be in trouble.

https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/25/uk-researchers-develop-new-low-cost-rapid-covid-19-test-that-could-even-be-used-at-home/ $120 equipment, $5 sample swab. Etc.

Not taking this as an attack, just responding.

You did join two separate thoughts to come to your conclusion about my frame of mind.  Not kosher in pursuit of the real context.

The last line was a question to the poster who asked me about my original thought :

 kurtster wrote:

And I think that we need to hear from all sides, not just yours and those you approve of.

The rest was me speaking personally about all of the years here and the roles we all play and all of the posturing involved in this endless session of partisan bashing of each other in which it is usually me against everyone else.  But the line above was in response to what I thought was bullying and trying to censor thought.  And i called it out, politely and gently.

I'm sick of everyone pretending to be speaking in unbiased and neutral positions in espousing a political reaction to some daily event.  I'm done playing that game, is all.  You all assume my bias, yet deny your own.  At least that is my opinion.  And that is how I am going to behave going forward.  I'm not going to accept the denial of bias anymore.  You (all) behave the way you want to and I will behave the way I do.

Yeah, I'm reset already.  And a repeat of my even earlier explanation :

Since there is nothing but doom and gloom being talked about here, I'm just taking some time, in which I have tried to be most straightforward, honest, civil and polite the entire time, to clear the air in here over some long standing issues and problems.  And I think that the overall discourse has been at a high level considering the discussion.

I'm just dealing with all the attitudes going on in here, once and for all.  Few want to hear what I post in here.  And there are a lot of things posted in here that I don't want to hear as well.  Yet all these things get posted.  I tolerate yours, you can tolerate mine. We can disagree and ignore, as long as we tolerate.

So carry on, feel what ever it is that y'all feel and live with it somehow.  Me, I'm just getting it all out of my system so I can move forward with less bullshit involved.  And I have got most of it worked out of my system.

I'm doing everything to keep my glass half full.

Good luck, every new day is still a new day for me.

A reminder of the post that started this entire flame war.  I thought I was bringing some sort of hope and optimism into the middle of all the doom and gloom in here with this post.

 kurtster wrote:
It reinforces my understanding and already formed conclusions about this situation we face.  I've been living the immuno system dance for the past 11 years now as both a patient, caregiver and a health care provider.  I no longer get seasonal flu shots.  I got the mac daddy old person shot 2 seasons ago and it almost killed me.  I had all of the adverse reactions including fever over 102 for a couple of days.  My oncologist told me I needed it.  My GP told me that it almost killed me and to never get it again.  I will go through the rest of my life without a net.  I must rely upon paying attention to my surroundings and paying close attention to what my body is trying to tell me.  The same as everyone else.

Without a doubt, the Hammer is the answer, at least here in the USA with our borders closed until further notice.  Testing will be the key to our recovery.  Just in this afternoon's briefing it was announced that we should have a test available within one week, the end of this month, that will have results within 45 minutes.  The sooner we can identify the infected and recovered, the sooner we can get back to normal.  We will know who is now immune and safe to be in the general public without putting other's at risk.

We must put this into perspective.  The piece that sird posted earlier is also the same understanding I have of this virus and thanks for the most informative and accurate post. In just two short months, we have gone from Houston, we have a problem to a 45 minute test for a brand new unknown pathogen.  That is pretty effing amazing in my understanding of medicine, technology and manufacturing.  But no one seems satisfied with the pace of improvements and developments.  Really ?

This is the modern equivalent of our moon shot in the 60's when in a few short years we declared that we would put a man on the moon before the turn of the next decade, using blackboards, chalk, slide rules and simple pencil and paper.  And we did.  This is the same country.  We are doing something equally as dramatic and impossible right now.  Perspective is everything.  But at the same time, most people alive never were around the last time we had a man on the moon and have no understanding of something so huge and complex, yet simple with today's technology, even though we haven't figured out how to get back to the moon in all of this time since.

But that seems to be the expectations of this impatient instant gratification social mass we live in today.  Yo, we did it 50 years ago.  The technology is ancient and sitting on the shelf.  Get a man back on the moon by next Tuesday or you have failed us.  With a mentality such as this, I am not optimistic about the hammer succeeding here.  Throw in the added dimension of our coming election and a faction of people dedicated to opposing the success of and defeating the person they must support in order to save us all.  I only say that as an observation and nothing more, but it must be said.

Lastly, with so much emphasis on the ICU capacity problem, a little bit about how we got there with that in the USA.  miamiz has touched on this often.  It is the individual states (over 30) who determine and regulate how many beds for what purpose and what hospital are allowed.  And what kind of equipment is also allowed including the number of ventilators. It is the governors of these states who make these decisions.  It is these rules that have put the constraints on the system that we must now deal with and overcome.  And it is Congress who decides how many doctors we are allowed to have.  This is the system that has been in place since the 1950's.  If you have been watching NY Gov Cuomo's daily briefings, you will hear him repeatedly reference these restrictions and how he is waiving them in order to increase capacity.  He just did this waiver within the past couple of days.  By so doing this he has now enabled FEMA to come into NY with their fully staffed self contained 250 bed hospitals.  He is getting at least 4 of these hospitals adding 1000 fully staffed beds.  They will be placed in the Javitts Convention Center on Manhattan Island.  He has been most informative, calming and reassuring in his daily briefings.  I believe that California is getting 8 and Washington State is getting 4.  Things are moving and fast.  The staggering amount of institutional crap, redtape and other problems is being overcome.  To remove in days what took decades to install is impressive all by itself.  Yet people still call this foot dragging.

To see the movement of the two hospitals ships characterized on these boards as trivial, empty and too late is really astonishing.  What ?  Have you already given up ?  You think the shit has already hit the fan ?  No, not even close.  Yet you object to getting things properly placed and staged for what is yet to come.  Every little bit helps.  Anyone remember the Butterfly Effect ?  Have faith in something for the sake of whatever your higher power is.

I mentioned earlier that we still have the potential for this to all seem like just a bad dream after a few months of Hell.  I still believe that to be true.  I see the solutions unfolding ahead of us in unparalleled rapid fire order.  But it will only be true if we put down our differences and work together in the same direction.  That is how we got a man on the moon in short order.

Let's do it again.

German case numbers (non-cumulative)... first signs that suppression might be working  (the most recent days (in orange) are not very reliable).
