If we limited airplay on RP to artists that nobody had ever demanded — and/or requested politely — that we stop playing , it would be a very short list. Definitely no U2, Radiohead, Stones, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Talking Heads, Bowie, Tori Amos, Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, Neil Young,  The National, Dire Straits, or Peter Gabriel. Oh, and nothing with a guitar solo. Or cymbals.

And if we limited airplay only to artists who were well-behaved  good citizens, things would be *really* quiet around here :-)

We do have some limits. Bono's lyrics and voice may win out over his tax hypocrisy, but Ryan Adams? Sorry, dude.

Actually I get the impression Lightfoot mellowed out quite nicely in the later years.

It was more the visual I was going for but he always seemed like a mellow, pleasant sort of guy to me - I don't know if he actually was/is.  He has been married 3 times but he hasn't left Canuckistan for a tax dodge; I imagine he still lives in Ontario somewhere.

I agree, I completely separate the artist from the art.  It's ok to listen to U2 (or not) even if you think they are hypocrites, or Michael Jackson if you think he is a child abuser.  Enjoy that Kevin Spacey movie, it wasn't your fault he acts that way.  Like you said, just like the general public a lot of them are lame human beings, but I am not going to let that get in the way of enjoying their creative output if I like it. {#Music}

My post isn't about taste, it's about morality. Taste is something personal. Morality or ethics, if you like, too a much lesser extent.

I'm boycotting U2 not because of their music, but because of their hypocrisy.

It always amazes me that folks that regularly listen to RP, with Bill's genius mixing of sets, such a unique source of great tunes, can nonetheless turn up to be haters for a particular band they don't care for. Hit PSD for christ's sake.

I first saw U2 in 1983 at the US Festival. They were barely know, a bunch of rough Irish rogue punk rockers, raw, exciting. They came on in front of the 300,000 of us in the early afternoon and absolutely captivated the crowd. Electric, exciting, daring, putting it all out there as if they were in a Dublin club, Bono climbing the huge scaffolding above the stage, having a big flag, The Edge shredding his guitar, Larry & Adam pounding out the beat. They had about 2 songs I'd heard on the radio, Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day. They played for about an hour straight through, barely pausing between a song here and there. At the end the crowd was on there feet yelling & clapping.  A week later they played the infamous Red Rocks show, playing the same show in the pouring rain, which was filmed & became legend. That was 10 years before I moved to Colorado, where I've seen many, many shows at Red Rocks. God, I wish I'd been to that one.

Over the years I've seen them many times. I caught the final show of their Innocence Tour, July 31 2015, the last of 8 shows at Madison Square Garden in NYC. From 1983 to then it was the same intensity, same incredible performances by each band member, at times immensely spectacular, then that same rawness I saw at the US Festival.  Thrilling. I flew to Houston in 2017 to catch the Joshua Tree Anniversary Tour. Another amazing performance.

Too much U2?  Not for my taste.

Did you catch that US festival documentary?   Was pretty good, but it covered the first one and I don't think they were in that one.  They played performances by Petty, Fleetwood Mac, B52s, The Police and more.   Petty sounded the best, I have underrated him over the years.  BTW, not a U2 fan but I do recognize the talent.  Saw them at Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia SC in 91 I believe and Bono sounded crystal clear like he was in my living room from way up in the top back of stadium.  Best sound guys I guess, but Bono has the chops even if he is the worlds biggest turd!

That's an interesting feature. Some of the categories need some parameters put on, like no plays/1 rating shouldn't put it at the top of the ratings list.

Tanks for the link. It confirms that there is too much airtime, and thus too much in royalties, for the tax evaders.
As for the other bands mentioned, I don't have any issues with them. If it's not too my liking, I just skip the song. Try that on the old skool radio...
