Brilliant legal scholars they're not. Trump was probably blowing smoke anyway, throwing some red meat to his base before the election...
I think that's more of what he was trying - another one of his pie-in-the-sky spasms, like the 10% tax cut being worked on by the out-of-session Congress. You all get a pony!!!
In the interview with Axios, Trump falsely claimed: âWeâre the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States for 85 years with all of those benefits.â He added: âItâs ridiculous. Itâs ridiculous. And it has to end.â
In fact, dozens of states around the world, including Canada and Brazil, endow the same right. Countries such as the UK and Australia endow a restricted version.

Constitutional amendments cannot be overridden by the president and can only be altered by a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress or support from two-thirds of state governments.
Nonetheless, attempts to curtail the right to citizenship at birth have long been pursued by hardliners in the Republican party. Legislation has been proposed in both the Senate and the House in recent years but has never passed a vote.
On Tuesday, the Republican senator Lindsey Graham said he would introduce legislation to support Trumpâs plan. In a statement, he said his measure would be âalong the same linesâ as the executive order. He did not give any details or timeline
Brilliant legal scholars they're not. Trump was probably blowing smoke anyway, throwing some red meat to his base before the election, but there is an argument that's been tossed around right-wing circles for a while claiming that the 14th amendment doesn't say what it plainly does. This article is a compact shredding of that argument.
If they try this in Congress it would likely die the slow, lingering death it deserves in the Senate. If it's tried as an executive order it would be instantly challenged in court and would fail very quickly. If it makes it as far as the Supremes we can be grateful that Trump's appointments have been textualists/originalists.
When rooting for judges be careful what you wish for.

I just read a New Yorker article that suggests, with mounting evidence, the Trump Organization's business model is fraud. Not real estate or casinos or even branding, but good old-fashioned fraud.
I know you are shocked. c.
Is Fraud Part of the Trump Organization’s Business Model?

I am hoping that when we reach the end of this debacle, that the Trump presidency will serve at least as a handy rejoinder for whenever someone says: If only we had a businessman as President.
He's gonna be re-elected no matter what it takes. He'll cheat the system again and then will appoint himself president for life. Especially if the house and the senate are in his back pocket after midterms. Make no mistake about it. This guy is dangerous.

Pump and Trump Donald Trump claims he only licensed his name for real estate projects developed by others. But an investigation of a dozen Trump deals shows deep family involvement in projects that often involved deceptive practices.

President Trumpâs constant, relentless, remorseless lying is a central feature of his presidency, an unprecedented threat to our democracy and â in my view â an impeachable offense.
I realize it does not qualify as news that Trump lies all the time. I also realize it is not always possible to draw a bright line between untruths Trump knows are untrue and conspiratorial nonsense he might foolishly believe. But never before have we had a leader who so pollutes the national discourse with garbage that he at least ought to know is false â and I fear the consequences will be with us long after Trump is gone.
At his inauguration, Trump swore to âfaithfully execute the office of president.â He violates that oath when he speaks to the nation in bad faith. Other presidents have lied â Lyndon B. Johnson about Vietnam, Richard M. Nixon about Watergate, Bill Clinton about Monica Lewinsky. But never have we had a president who lies about everything , who invents his own fake facts, who continues to trumpet patent falsehoods even when confronted with the actual facts.
And yes, undisputed facts do exist and can be ascertained. I am not talking about subtle matters of interpretation; Iâm taking about knowing falsehoods, commonly known as lies. (...)
