The way I remember it, Zappa's name was well known in 1979 but his music was considered fringe (juvenile, actually) and not widely heard. He is bigger now than he was then, similar to the situation with Bowie. Zappa was part of the attack on disco but I can't believe he was influential enough to cause the war.

It was a political/commercial movement called "disco sucks" that was triggered by a televised stunt at a baseball game which was a kind of book burning. The culture of drugs, sex, and good music was a commercial threat to rock, and other forms of white music like country, so it was destroyed. See the BBC documentary below starting at about 33:00.
