a couple of years ago i stayed on grand bahama very close to the projected eye strike

they've got some newer construction with multi-strories (casinos, hotels, etc.)

i hope this storm loses strength and peters out sooner rather than later

It's one of the out islands in the Bahama chain (the joke is they are out of everything, but they are really just the further out from the mainland). It is very remote and has limited services. The lee side is like a big harbor and very shallow for a long way, so you get some beautiful waters.

We've stayed at a place called Bennett Harbor a couple of times and it is amazing. Perfect turquoise water, soft white sand, very few other people. The locals are friendly, and it's a perfect place to relax. You have to bring a lot of your food though (there's not a lot of variety on the island). You can get fresh fish and lobster easily.  There is a cool little restaurant called the cookie house, but if you want dinner you stop in at about noon and discuss options with them - atypical conversation is something like this:

Us: We'd like to come by for dinner.
Them: Okay, what you want?
Us: Do you have a menu?
Them: No.
Us: uh... what can we have?
Them: You like fish? You want Conch?
Us: Sure.
Them: Okay, see you later.

They then retreat to the back, we exchange glances of "what the hell?".  But we came back that evening and they had a fantastic dinner all set up for us. Some other people came in while we were there and asked about dinner, they were asked to "come back tomorrow, not enough food left tonight".

I just heard from the people I know on Cat Island, they are staying in Texas and have done all the prep they thought they could. They said some people left, but a whole lot of the locals stayed behind. There is major concern about the storm surge (despite having the the highest point in the Bahamas most of the island is very low). 

Hope the impact is minor.
