I use these Alpine plugs which are popular with musicians:  http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-Hearing-Protection-MusicSafe-Classic/dp/B0032BYCWG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1435083247&sr=8-1&keywords=musicians+ear+plugs

But for optimal protection, the best is a cheapo pair of foam plugs...just make sure you insert correctly.

Thanks black.  I have used foam plugs while working heavy industry or doing jobs around the house like using an electric sander.  Though I prefer full ear covers for working with a chain-saw or in a mill.

The foam plugs do remove noise but do so unevenly.

Your suggestion looks great.

Well, we went to see Steven Wilson at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver — his first ever musical performance in Vancouver.

We enjoyed it but overall it was too loud.  Some of it was painfully loud.  Several times, the wall of sound just obscured all the rich texture that is a trademark of Wilson's studio work.

I wish I had brought acoustical ear plugs..... which I have never used before..... but after that concert seem like a great idea.

So two questions....

1)  Why do performers crank it up so loud?  Marketing?

2)  How do you cope with the loudness?  (Other than not going....)  If you use ear plugs, which ones would you recommend?

I have significant tinnitus—I blame Keith Richards {#Yes}— actually far too many live concerts at which I disregarded sound protection. And headphones while in an altered state.
Even an acoustic orchestra can be painful to me now.

Because they've blown their ears out and are so self centered they don't realize the rest of the world can hear.
Hearos.
