I suspect that if you listen carefully for a while, you'll appreciate the added depth & the lifelike quality of the audio.
The changes in audio processing in the apps actually happened several versions & about 2 years ago. The switch from Ogg to AAC happened about a year or so ago.
Audio quality assessments are very subjective. Two of the most frequent comments I've gotten from the new apps (& web player) are "too much bass" and "not enough bass" :-).
Another thing to note is that comparing the apps to our old player (or any other stream player) is a bit of an apples-&-oranges thing. The skip & seamless PSD features are impossible using streams. The players all actually download & temporarily store individual audio files & then play them back according to very precise instructions.
Hi Bill, thanks for your prompt reply and sorry for my delay. I've tested the 3 stream settings in the app and all of them sound the same —- it looks like I'm always using the 'Med' stream (64k AAC). I also compared this to the 64k AAC stream using TuneIn. I'm using my Sennheiser hd 280 pro headphones connected to the Samsung S5. I'm also running version 3.9.9gp of the app. I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app with no change. Are there any logs files I can send you to help troubleshoot this problem? Thanks, Vlad

While playing the cache block, tap PSD, then 'Sync to Web Stream' to return to 'live' RP. When you tap 'cache' (cloud icon) & select Play on the saved cache block, it will pick up where you left off. You can have as many cache blocks as you like, limited only by available storage.
On the new versions of the app, there's a 'cache location' option in the settings. That allows you to select your SD card as the cache storage location.
Thank you that is exactly what I was looking for!

It seems the only option at that point would be to delete the block to get back to live streaming. Is there any remedy for this? I'd really like to be able to switch back and forth between blocks and live-streaming if I want to. Thanks!!! Thanks in advance, Peter We don't have links to the old version. What problem(s) are you having with the new version? They can probably be resolved. I'd start by deleting the app & reistalling it from the Play Store.

Yay! You have no idea how happy this makes me to know there is a fix coming soon for Andoid 7 Nougat. I listen to RP in my car every day and the problems for the last few months since Android N preview #2 have been making me depressed. After the RP app played Fleetwood Mac Hypnotized 5 times in an hour my wife made me listen to FM radio.

I'm using a Nexus 6 running Android 7.0 Nougat so it isn't that I have an old phone or version of Android.
Any suggestions?

I get the (Could not retrieve offline list), if I go to 12 hours. If I set it back to 11 hours she down loads. But since I can download more then one block I can live with that until the bugs are worked out. I do have a question for the RP people...... Has the bit rate, file size been increased over older versions, when set to max file size? I have high end audio setup, and the files sound better then in the past. If so, thanks.
