I hadn't heard the term "stoop sale" before, though growing up around NYC, most people I knew didn't have a garage or a front yard, but some of us did have stoops.  I don't remember people selling their used stuff out on the street anyhow, unless they were homeowners who actually had a garage or front yard.

And some damn fine ones that really fit the beach atmosphere much better than the German alps. Odd though, I thought that the 1848 revolution is what put most of the Germans into Wisconsin, I thought the Mexican Germans were fleeing Texas after the Mexican American war (the American Intervention to the locals at the time). Guess that's all on the reading list for this weekend.  Anyway,

R_P, thanks for posting these charts! Lapham's Quarterly looks like a very cool journal. Some of the information it presents—for instance, African tribes trading gold for salt on river banks—show up in Dorothy Dunnett's outstanding historical novel series, The House of Niccolo.

Several of the plants shown here are not technically vegetables (tomato, cucumber, pumpkin, squash, pepper, okra), although "vegetable" is apparently not a botanical term.  I also question some of these origins, but cool picture anyhow.
