I like the way when you get to the intersection it switches to a different data set and they all vanish into thin air.  Press the little arrow to take one more step back and poof they're gone.

I must admit I was pretty disappointed when they finally got out here three or four years ago.  There's still hardly anything in this or any of the surrounding counties that isn't in a town or a main state road.  I still haven't figured out why we were singled out.

Google maps has a little side panel on the left which you may need to turn on with the little arrow button in the upper left or it will be there if you do any kind of search.  At the top of the side panel there are four buttons labeled "Get directions", "My places", a printer, and a chain.  Clicking on the picture of the chain will bring up a pop up window with a URL link to the map and embed code to put the map in your post like I've been doing.  Copy the embed code and paste it in your post where you want the map.  Press preview and you should see a box where the map will be in the edit window though the preview itself will still show the HTML code.  Hit preview again and the code will be replaced with a blank space in the preview window as well.  You won't be able to see the actual map until the post is actually submitted but if you want to test it first to get it centered and scaled the way you want it you can create a local file on your computer with notepad called "test.html" with the embed code in it.  Double clicking on the file's icon should bring it up in your browser or if you prefer doing it the hard way you can enter the name "file:///C:/My%20Documents/test.html" in directly into your browser's URL window.

Yeah, I didn't know how to post a good pic. If you scroll a little west of 'LUECKE' you can see where the big fire was. Our place is east and north a little bit.

This is maybe five miles from our country estate. The pic is rotated: it runs N-S with the 'L' at the north end.

That's pretty cool.  That is a huge parcel of land...but I guess it's just average size for Texas.

For the past few years there has been an upstart new interstate running roughshod over the good people of this state at such a breakneck pace it is totally befuddling Google satellite.  Google street view has in general though been keeping right on its trail.  As you can see below street view has no doubt as to whether there is a farm or an interstate there now.

From shortly after NAFTA (when funding became available) this nefarious road had been been threatening to treat me the same as the poor fellow above and run straight through my living room.  Then a little over a year ago a bevy of surveyors, hydrologists, and geologists swooped in and at the last moment the highway swerved to just barely miss me.  It does now appear though that in a year or two the road will actually be here and street view just a couple of months after that. It has occurred to me that I really should come up with some appropriate yard art for the occasion and not being the terribly creative sort I thought I would solicit suggestions here.

As an odd little aside, out where I am there is a strange time warp in Google satellite.  The scar running through my forest below is the corridor for the road which appeared in the blink of an eye early this year when the big industrial strength tree killer came in.  If you zoom out any farther though or zoom all the way down to last couple of resolutions or into street view then the trees and all of my neighbors suddenly come back.

I would rather have a display that will be seen from the interstate instead of the county road but as it turns out I will still have one neighbor between me and it where they thought it would be a good idea to leave the house but trash the lot.  All kinds of people can't wait to move way out in the country to have a smaller yard then they could get in the city and be right next to the interstate too.  I am on much better terms with all my neighbors than the road is.  I've talked of this to all of them with frontage and all are in favor and we of course would not be limited to just one installation.  I'll try to remember to post some pictures of the overpass when its finished (next spring?) so you'll know what I'm working with.  My current thoughts for my own lot are along the lines of something evil lurking in the woods or possibly something using the two huge oak stumps I've been thinking of taking up chainsaw sculpting with for some time now.

Once again all suggestions welcome and any good general info like a cheap source for mannequins or inside Google schedule info would certainly be appreciated as well.  I know  it's still a long way off but I am a truly epic procrastinator so the earlier I start putting it off the better.
