We got this email from our department Chair today:
Dear Colleagues –
In the current climate of problems with the educational system, youth violence, socioeconomic disadvantage, and mental health, finding rays of hope can often appear challenging…
Whether or not you follow sports, it is easy to notice the coverage of the Taney Dragons, the youth baseball team from Philadelphia currently competing in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. The Taney Dragons are led by 13-year-old Mo’ne Davis, the 18th girl to play in the history of the Little League World Series tournament and one of the most exciting players in youth baseball history. The Dragons won their most recent game over the team from Texas in exciting, come-from-behind fashion this past Sunday.
Please try to set aside some time this evening to watch the Dragons take on the team representing Las Vegas, NV (7:30pm, ESPN) as a reminder of the excitement, power, and fun of our youth facing challenges, working hard, overcoming obstacles, and achieving wonderful goals.
GO DRAGONS!!
It is exciting, but I have to worry that it is getting to be a bit over the top. They are kids, afterall.

And now, once again, I bid my hideous progeny go forth and prosper. I have an affection for it, for it was the offspring of happy days, when death and grief were but words, which found no true echo in my heart.
But I am a blasted tree; the bolt has entered my soul; and I felt then that I should survive to exhibit what I shall soon cease to be - a miserable spectacle of wrecked humanity, pitiable to others and intolerable to myself.
Elegance is inferior to virtue.
Every political good carried to the extreme must be productive of evil.
