It does often look like pie - especially if there is a separate crust which it is made in. When they're made in a spring-form pan, they look more like cakes, with vertical sides as opposed to diagonal (pie-like) sides. I think some bakers consider cheesecake a torte - since there is no flour, apparently. It's just one of those conundrums, I guess, but all conundrums should be so tasty.
