Been there done that. When OV & I were living together walking distance from Pete's we'd go there after midnight & have breakfast I live in West Wash Park, which you would know is about a 10 minute drive to Pete's. I still frequent the place when I'm out that way. It's an institution for sure.

My best friend's older brother worked here in the early 70's and when I got my DL we would go to the back door near closing time and get bags full.

Anyhow most of my old boys are long gone. I think about them and all the shenanigans quite often.
It's still there. Golden Arches are gone and it's just one of those ugly buildings but hey, Macprogress or something. Often notable.
A fast-food icon
In September 1959, the Golden Arches arrived in North Carolina. The 140th McDonaldâs, on Summit Avenue in Greensboro, was the first in the state, and the first fast-food restaurant in the city. The revolutionary streamlined method of food preparation, modeled on Henry Fordâs automobile assembly-line process, allowed diners to get their meals faster and cheaper than anywhere else in town. The menuâs only combo meal included a hamburger, fries, and a shake â all for just 45 cents.
Nearly 63 years later, the restaurant is still open in its original location, albeit in a new building. James âSmittyâ Smith, who has co-owned the restaurant with his wife, Debra, since 2000, is proud to own North Carolinaâs first McDonaldâs. Heâs prouder still to be one of the first African Americans to own a McDonaldâs restaurant in the Triad, an honor he achieved when he purchased two other Greensboro locations in 1993. âFrom 1959 to 1963, African Americans couldnât even go in the front door to be served; they had to go to the back door,â Smitty says of the Summit Avenue location. âSome of my church members mentioned that to me when we purchased it â how proud they were of my family.
