My God, he's a wall of muscle and fur. Black bears look like house pets next to this.

Another pic from the story:

photo of man and Kodiak bear playing

"They're content, they're happy. If they weren't," Kowalczik pauses as Jimbo licks him, "you would know it."

...And then you'd turn into lunch.

About three miles in, I stepped out into an open meadow and hollered again. A few more steps and I spotted a sow Grizzly bear with cubs on the trail at the upper end of the meadow. The sow saw me right away and they ran a short distance up the trail. But suddenly she turned and charged straight my way. I yelled a number of times so she knew I was human and would hopefully turn back. No such luck. Within a couple seconds, she was nearly on me. I gave her a full charge of bear spray at about 25 feet. Her momentum carried her right through the orange mist and on me.

There is an "if it isn't true, it should be" story about a group of geologists prospecting in the Yukon Territory, Canada, who decided to try to keep bears away by stringing a wire around their camp hooked up to a battery and big horn. They woke up in the middle of the night hearing BLAAAAAAT! .... BLAAAAAAT! .... BLAAAAAAT! ...

Looked out and a bear was sitting with a fascinated look, playing with the horn a few inches from its face.

I was working in Yukon a few years back. One of the members of the geology team was a First Nation local guide. He offered to cook some moose one day in the field. It was pretty strange eating this meal with two guys standing guard, holding shotguns, facing outward from the meal. They said just the hint of cooking moose usually brings the bears running...toward you.  Glad it didn't happen.

But the way she charged at him kind of set her apart from "normal" bears anyway. We'd have had that pistol out and ready, especially since his bear spray was gone (you only get one good 5-second fog out of a can of that stuff).

The pepper spray not working was the thing that concerns most people around here... it can be incorrectly done, so that the bear doesn't get it, but she just came right through and doesn't sound like she was fazed at all.

I've always thought that an air horn might be a good thing to carry too... ooh, if they made the pepper spray go off with a BLAAAAAAT! noise too...

wow what a story

yeah i think a loud noise wouldn't hurt in an attempt to scare a bear away

or a potent bear spray the size of a standard fire extinguisher
