I have fine, slippery hair, and a friend taught me how to put it in a bun in a snap:

- Have 2 hair sticks handy.  Slippery chop sticks work (I sawed them off, 'cause they were too long).  Pencils are fun, as long as they don't have a rough edge that will snag.
- Bend forward, hair hanging down, and start twisting your hair. 
- Adjust yourself and the twisting so that the the base of the twist (like a rope) will be at the part of your head where the bun will end up.
- Keep twisting 'til it's pretty tight, (you can probably stand up by now) and it will naturally start to twist the twist into a bun.  It doesn't have to be a super tight bun.  I like mine kind of flat, so I envision I'm rolling the twist into a cinnamon bun on my head.
- Now weave one of the sticks into the bun: through the bun, into some hair on your head, back into the bun, back into some hair on your head.
- If the one stick mostly holds it, you've done it right.
- Now do the same with the 2nd stick, and it stays comfortably against your head, without pulling and hopefully with no headache.
- I'll sometimes move a stick if it's pulling or hurting, or I'll just start over if it's not holding together right.  It's so fast to do.

Mine is only long now because I'm too lazy to cut it or keep it cut. I'm also tired of coloring it. My grandmother always wanted white or silver hair but as she aged it became "mousier & mousier". My hair is doing the exact same as hers. I think I'm two-toned now. Anyhow, Augusta did tell me this the other day: "Mom, you know, they have this stuff - in boxes- that will make your hair different colors. You could make yours blue."

So, I guess I'm trying out blue today... 

I stopped using shampoo.  It takes a fairly long time for the hair follicles to adjust — and stop cranking out extra oil to compensate for the extreme drying qualities of shampoo.

I'll use a dot of shampoo about every two weeks, just washing around my scalp.

I need only a fraction of the conditioner that I used to use.  (My hair tangles too badly if there's no conditioner, so I really can't go without.)

I'm a wash 'n wear type. it's long and straight. I only use a dryer if I'm getting dressed up to go out and it needs a styling. that is about twice a year.
I cut it when it gets annoyingly long. last time was 2 years ago. I had enough to donate to Locks of Love. I'm thinking it's time to cut again and I probably have enough for another donation.

I wear mine long and loose only on the days I have washed it. The rest of the week I keep it in a braid.
