Its way more easy if someone who's done it before is there to help you.

Don't be shy, call a electric-wise-peep and they'll walk you through it.  I wish I lived closer! I'd bring my electric repair books and bin 'o electric stuff and some beers.  I love this stuff!

Take pictures!

non-contact voltage detector. They are about $10 at Home Depot. Especially in old houses that may have had others working on them over the years, it is not impossible to turn off the breaker and still find voltage lurking where you want to work. It's less exciting than finding out with the screwdriver, but who needs that kind of thrill anyway.

I agree   Super easy I promise.  If appy and I could install a box, anyone can.  But if you have the cash and don't want the hassle, it should be cheap if you have to hire it out.  We'd do it for beer.

Cut the plug off?

Does the hardwireyness come out of the wall thru any kind of box, or just a hole punched in the plaster? If it's a box, you can wire up a new outlet (69¢ down at the True Value) and you're off to the races. The box will have threaded holes to accept the socket...

It goes without saying, does it not, that you should flip the breaker to the dishwasher (possibly also the whole kitchen, hey) before doing any of this, right?

If the wire just comes snaking out of the wall with no box/cover plate, you can (turn off the power) cut the plug off the dishwasher, cut the wire about a foot out from the wall, remove some insulation from each cut end, separate out the wires by color (the wall should have white/black/green-covered wires inside) and twist them together with wire nuts white-to-white, black-to-black. I'm sure it ain't code, tho. You can get wire nuts filled with tarry goop that will make it a water-resistant connection. It'll be fine.

Oh, and 220 is no big deal either - 110 is Line to Neutral, 220 is just Line to Line. Take normal precautions, get yourself this book:

(also $10 at Home Depot).

You less likely to get hurt if you make a mistake with this stuff than if you make a mistake w/ a power saw.  Do be careful, but that goes for all things home repair.

If you're thinking that cutting the plug off is some kind of hack, it isn't.

If you want to get it running tonight, go do the wire nuts thing, then this weekend you can get the box and do it better. It'll be fine. BONUS: 110 won't kill you. Very often.

I was installing a dishwasher in a house I lived in in Oakland way back when. Had the old dead one out, new one ready to go in, roommate was standing in the doorway watching for a while. Had the plumbing all set to go but was inevitably sitting in a puddle of water. Had some pliers on bare wire and the roommate went into the pantry area *flick* *flick* no lights. So he came back in the kitchen and flipped the breaker! Zow!

Well, this also means that we'll have to figure out what we need before we even know how to install it.
