Beaker wrote:In other news: "In a rather stunning series of admissions, the suspended chief of the East Anglia CRU now admits that the warming seen in the late 20th century may not be unprecedented after all, that the planet has stopped warming for the last 15 years despite the predictions of AGW advocates, and that his own record-keeping has been poor. Phil Jones, who stepped down at least temporarily from his position at the CRU when its e-mails exposed a series of embarrassing attempts by climate scientists to undermine careers of skeptics and to hide contradictory data, now says that the entire basis of the “hockey stick” graph could have been invalid:" That's a solid B+ Phil! "“The temperature records cannot be relied on as indicators of global change,” said John Christy, professor of atmospheric science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, a former lead author on the IPCC." "One of the most widely quoted and most alarmist passages in the main 2007 report was a warning that, by 2020, global warming could reduce crop yields in some countries in Africa by 50 per cent. Dr Pachauri not only allowed this claim to be included in the short Synthesis Report, of which he was co-editor, but has publicly repeated it many times since." Melting Glaciers Scientist Blames Issue on MisquoteIndia Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said yesterday in New Delhi that while melting glaciers are a “serious” issue, to draw the conclusion they’ll disappear is “alarmist and not necessarily based on facts.” Spin, Spin, Spin. Deniers are nothing if not good at it. Get the facts and perspective: IPCC errors: Facts and SpinIs climate science sound? In some media reports the impression has been given that even the fundamental results of climate change science are now in question, such as whether humans are in fact changing the climate, causing glacier melt, sea level rise and so on. The IPCC does not carry out primary research, and hence any mistakes in the IPCC reports do not imply that any climate research itself is wrong. A reference to a poor report or an editorial lapse by IPCC authors obviously does not undermine climate science. Doubting basic results of climate science based on the recent claims against the IPCC is particularly ironic since none of the real or supposed errors being discussed are even in the Working Group 1 report, where the climate science basis is laid out. To be fair to our colleagues from WG2 and WG3, climate scientists do have a much simpler task. The system we study is ruled by the well-known laws of physics, there is plenty of hard data and peer-reviewed studies, and the science is relatively mature. The greenhouse effect was discovered in 1824 by Fourier, the heat trapping properties of CO2 and other gases were first measured by Tyndall in 1859, the climate sensitivity to CO2 was first computed in 1896 by Arrhenius, and by the 1950s the scientific foundations were pretty much understood. Do the above issues suggest "politicized science", deliberate deceptions or a tendency towards alarmism on the part of IPCC? We do not think there is any factual basis for such allegations. To the contrary, large groups of (inherently cautious) scientists attempting to reach a consensus in a societally important collaborative document is a prescription for reaching generally "conservative" conclusions. And indeed, before the recent media flash broke out, the real discussion amongst experts was about the AR4 having underestimated, not exaggerated, certain aspects of climate change. These include such important topics as sea level rise and sea ice decline (see the sea ice and sea level chapters of the Copenhagen Diagnosis), where the data show that things are changing faster than the IPCC expected.

Distinguishing Climate “Deniers” From “Skeptics”David BrinA fair number of people have written in response to my previous posting— The Real Struggle Behind Climate Change: A War on Expertise—griping that I do not get a crucial distinction between climate change “Skeptics” and “Deniers.” Several claimed to be rational, educated fellows who regret the shrill anti-intellectualism of Fox News. Yet, they still defend the core notion underlying the anti-HGCC (Human Generated Climate Change) movement—the premise that virtually 100% of the thousands of scientists in a given field can be suborned, corrupted, or intimidated simultaneously into supporting a nonsensical, baseless theory. A baseless theory that thousands of “skeptics” happen to be able to see through, all at the same time. “We skeptics just want to get our questions answered,” one person wrote. “Until then, of course, society should do nothing rash.” That sounds so reasonable, who could refuse? Well, in fact, after two decades of seeing “let’s not do anything rash” used as a talking point excuse for doing nothing at all? No, it doesn’t sound reasonable. But let’s focus on the core matter at hand. (...)

Greenland's glaciers disappearing from the bottom upWater warmed by climate change is taking giant bites out of the underbellies of Greenland's glaciers. Up to 75 per cent of the ice lost by the glaciers is melted by ocean warmth.

Just for perspective, in a couple weeks the same place is having a convention for the National Wild Turkey Federation: When Jim Crumley - considered by many as the father of modern camouflage - started attending the National Wild Turkey Federation's National Convention and Sport Show in 1981, exhibitors set up on folding tables in a small meeting room and about 2,000 people attended. More than 20 years later at the NWTF's 30th annual National Convention and Sport Show in 2006, over 500 exhibitors will display their fare in a 3-acre area for more than 40,000 people.
