Don't know if he qualifies as a celebrity to most, but he was to me.  I missed the announcement earlier this week.

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman dies at 96


He was a genius but able to communicate to just about anyone willing to listen. And he could do it in an way that was engaging for the entire audience and make people want to know about the inner workings of our world.  I am lucky to have met the man in the early 90's at Fermilab just after his retirement as the director there. I knew I was going back to school at the time, but I think he was a bit part of being serious about it and focusing on science.

Ah, dang. I met him, I guess. San Francisco, I was walking my dog, had a beer at a bar on Grant, dog was outside and some guy asked for a dish of water for the dog out front. I said thanks, the guy said "he looked thirsty" and I said "Thirsty for BLOOD!" and he laughed. Later, someone said it was Marty Balin. No idea, could've been.
