It's the only disc I've done so far, that my wife didn't like.
busy as all get out just started listening in the background
immediately had to stop take a look at who was playing
that second song has a fantastic hook!

Finding tunes Kurt hasn't heard is like showing up at at a party with a dish no one has tasted—true hipster cred! Truth be known I was unfamiliar with most of this collection when I started.

Me too. I love the positivity of the lyrics. So many people I want to play this for.
Thanks. I's corny and saccharine and I like it.
Not I. Sounds like something I'd want to hear!
I originally included it as a counter to a bunch of long atmospheric tracks that ended up too long for the mix. Now it's just there because I like it.
I went back and forth on this one. The opening and chorus kick much ass, but the verses are kinda...mediocre. It's the box a great song could have come in. In the end I decided it worked, but there is more promise here than delivery. Band has potential.
Collective Soul gets no love on RP. The few songs in rotation get savaged in the comments. I don't get it; it seems if you get radio airplay after 1980 you're too bourgeois for the hipsters. Eh. I like 'em and it's my disc so neener neener.
This collection was so diverse when it started! Wound up being more whitebread than I intended due to my constraints, but...Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman! John Legend & The Roots! Jarmel Evans and Jade Foxx and Ella Fitzgerald and Coffin Cadillac! Y'all have no idea what you're missing.
A great smoky cabaret vibe. Loved her voice.
This is the one surviving techno-ish atmospheric number from the original pile. Liked it too much to leave it out even tho it's pretty long.
Ah, you and I go way back on this one. Way back when we could upload tracks for review we both uploaded this one, then the playlist got stuck overnight on this track and it got a million votes because people heard something they liked and voted it up, not realizing it was the wrong song. Just dumb luck that my upload got the nod and yours didn't, so...I owe ya one buddy. Or something.
And nobody caught the one deviation from the theme: the Lifesavas track is actually called Shine Language. I included it because I've been trying to sneak some Lifesavas into a mix since the project started and I never really found a theme where they fit. So I made them fit. Understood that rap doesn't work for everybody here but...it's my disc suckas!
Wow!
Thanks for the memories on the Meat Puppets upload. Too funny!
Yeah... rap. My open mindedness of music has a tendency to stop at rap.
Now if there was some melody... like this...
I would be interested.
Of course, this would be considered Hip Hop, I guess.
I think I uploaded this one way back.
Way to go Lazy. A great subject and some great songs. And a few I've never heard. I also liked the history of putting this together.

1. Love the Cracker. Always have.
Me too. I love the positivity of the lyrics. So many people I want to play this for.
3. Bruce T. Holmes. An inspirational tune. I feel better already.
Thanks. I's corny and saccharine and I like it.
6. Vienna Tang. Nice one. Does anyone remember Bill's only interview with her?
Not I. Sounds like something I'd want to hear!
9. eXp. A short ditty, I found interesting for some reason.
I originally included it as a counter to a bunch of long atmospheric tracks that ended up too long for the mix. Now it's just there because I like it.
10. Newsboys. I never heard of this band before. Need to investigate further.

11. Collective Soul. I've heard of these guys and this song before.

16. Tanisala. Never heard of her/ them before. Not bad.
A great smoky cabaret vibe. Loved her voice.
17. Younger Brother. I like this one because I think I heard a banjo in there someplace.
This is one of the few surviving techno-ish atmospheric number from the original pile. Liked it too much to leave it out even tho it's pretty long.
18. Meatpuppets. So you started this disc with one of my favorites. And ended with one of my favorites.

Just one question... What happened to Haysi Fantayzee?
Oh wait... Too Shiny, Shiny?

My highlights of your mix...
1. Love the Cracker. Always have.
3. Bruce T. Holmes. An inspirational tune. I feel better already.
6. Vienna Tang. Nice one. Does anyone remember Bill's only interview with her?
7. UNION. This one grew on me the more I listened to it.

Good job! And thanks for your efforts! Just one question... What happened to Haysi Fantayzee?

Sorry I'm such a slowpoke, wasn't sure everybody had had a chance to listen.
This project started 12 years ago. I was digging thru my music stash for a song I liked and found I had three called Shine. And I liked them all a lot. Huh, I wondered how many more there were out there.
One very long night later I had an answer of sorts: 90 that I could get my hands on. I also found another batch from bands called Shine, but that's another project altogether.
I put them all in a playlist and every now and then I would hit play and weed out the ones I didn't like. The playlist was still unwieldy when I started back up, but after some judicious editing it was down to...about 3 hours. Still unmanageable, so I added some additional constraints.
I wanted this disc to rock a lot harder than my recent mixes. I also know my audience, so I left a lot of good rap and some punktual stuff out. I did a quick scan of teh internets to see what new tunes had shown up since I started (just a few) and cut and chopped and here we are.
As a special surprise one of them is not quite like the others; this is left as an exercise for the listener. Sorry about the image quality of the covers, my printer has a dying toner cartridge and it looks...motley.
you succeeded, overall really good job with the theme and selection
the beginning, middle and end with Cracker, Collective Soul and the Meat Puppets are familiar rockin favs
new, catchy and nice are Bond, Parov Stelar ft Lilja Bloom, Oholics, Lifesavas, eXp, Newsboys, cool groove with Stick Figure and Younger Brother
Union, Shenan and Take That were solid rockers for me
one of those discs/sticks that you can load and let it play
throwin in on the mcc has been a good experience

I believe this is the first mix since I've been in the club (8 years? 9? I forget) where someone did a mix with a single word theme. Sounds like it's easy on the surface but based on your process explained it certainly is challenging. Leave it to you to make it "Shine". Sorry I couldn't resist. Lots of good stuff in here, most new to the ears for me.
I've always liked that line about being Burt Bacharach in the Cracker song. I might have to put some BB in an upcoming Mini Miser I like the lyrics in the Bruce Holmes song, but I can't help but picture John Belushi smashing his guitar on the stairs Animal House style Oholics (presumed to be from Ohio?) drummer is outstanding, very Keith Moonish. Vienna Tang has such an angelic voice. I've probably said this before, but I need some of her stuff in my collection. My favorite Shine on the mix. That Newsboys song rolls along rather nicely Shine by Collective Soul is the quintessential 90's song Stick Figure have a nice blend of Rap and Reggae, I'm not much of a fan of either but this one was enjoyable. Take That! I hear a heavy Queen influence. Cool band name. Jazzy feel to Tanisala, Very familiar with the Meat Puppets tune, probably thanks to Bill G!
I can't believe you've had this idea under wraps for 12 years. Thanks for bringing it to fruition. Well deserved kudos

My February CD is out of production and almost ready to ship. Gotta glue it together.
But first, I need to get to Mr. Lazy's review of Shine.
So that might take a few more days/ week.
