Thanks! Commissioning cover art from Justine probably counts as cheating. And I didn't personally examine the model bird, you'll have to ask Justine how she knows which birdbath it gets to use.
4 - Just a lovely duet, don't know of them but I'll bet they are great live

Sam Beam is the voice and guitar of Iron and Wine, and this is from Love Letters for Fire, one of my favorite albums of the last few years. Can't recommend it enough. Chocolate and peanut butter.
14 - A well crafted song, deserving of a one name artist.

SHEL is an acronym for the first letters of the names of the four Holbrook sisters: Sarah, Hannah, Eva and Liza. If it isn't obvious by now I'm a huge fan, so they've been on more than one of my mixes.
19 - I'm picturing Marty and wife dancing along to this one

Hasn't happened, but if it had a waltz beat...

This disc grew out of one of the Love Bomb discs. For no reason I can fathom a set of the songs I selected were about birds, and by female artists.  I liked it...so i ran with it.

Then of course I needed cover art. Serendipitously Justine was doing a series of pastels of bees and bugs and some birds crept into the mix. I commissioned a female Yellow Warbler picture and... ta da! Spectacular cover art. The check is in the mail, I promise.

And yes, I know most of the singing is done by male birds, but sometimes I just need to hear female voices. And now you can too!
The back cover is some finches eating sunflowers I shot off my front porch a few years ago.

On to the music!
1 - Neko's voice always makes my ears perk up so great opener for the mix
3 - I know my chicken? Hope so
4 - Just a lovely duet, don't know of them but I'll bet they are great live
6 - So hearing solo Hoop I found her singing and lyrics rather quirky but in a nice way
9 - Dig the blend of pedal steel and piano on this one
12 - I know its Shawn Colvin but at first it sounded like a Lucinda tune
13 - Amanda Shires  What does Jason Isbell have that I don't have? Aside from talent and good looks.
14 - A well crafted song, deserving of a one name artist.
16 - I'd hate to be the guy that was the inspiration for this song
19 - I'm picturing Marty and wife dancing along to this one
20 - Yet another lovely duet, very apropos of a bird mix.

Overall I'm putting this up there with one of your best mixes since I've been in the club. Funny how it just grew out of a tiny idea, that's how most great inspiration comes along.
Nice work Lazy!

Ironically magpies sound awful. And the bastards are constantly raiding my hens' nests for eggs.
3. Shades of Eric B with the beat and any song with chickens as the subject is already starting off with an unfair advantage. I mean how can you go wrong with chicken?
They have collaborated with a bunch of hiphop musicians (notable De La Soul) but this one is all Yuka and Miho.
7. This is my favorite song so far. Terrific guitar.
Considered a bunch more instrumentals but I really wanted vocals on this disc. This one was too pretty to pass up.
9. Birds they circle. This sounds like a traditional folk song. Is this one of those 150 plus year old songs?
Nope, original. Album was produced by Jack White at Third Man Studios, and it kinda feels like his fingerprints are all over it, especially the creepy goth/ghoul video for this song.
11. Love the Celtic influence in this. Nice violin
Ruth Moody is a Wailin' Jenny, and by now I think all of them have released solo albums. Birds are a frequent topic for them, and I had several in the mix at various times but I figured this said all it needed to. And yes, that's some sweet banjo!
18. Always loved this tune, I mean how can you not?

19. A segue within a mix within a mix. Love doing those little 2 or 3 fer within a mix with some play on it. Very nice. Love this song too. If'n you gotta banjo I am probably going to love it.
This is a Wyoming banjo/cello duo that has since split up, but the banjo half kept the name. Ran into them at a festival and asked where they got the name and yep, just what you'd think.
20. Same deal banjo. What a great name Seamus is. At first I thought you strayed a bit from the theme on this one, but then the birds singing fading out the mix was a very nice touch indeed. And besides if you did stray, who am I to say anything I can vaguely hold an idea together.
This was the inspiration that turned the idle thought of "Hmm, 3 songs in a row by women about birds, wonder where that came from" to a mix concept. Check out the lyrics a little closer, it'll make perfect sense. For those following along at home.

I liked the birdsong outro, and it matched a similar intro on another instrumental (that appeared on another mix disc you haven't heard but may someday, and besides it was another instrumental) that I deleted, but it seemed to belong at the end.

This one should be good.  There is always a huge pool of talented female singers to pull from so the possibilities are endless.  Highlights for me:

1.  Soft and gentle version of Ms. Case.  Unmistakable pipes when she turns the volume up that's for sure.

3.  Shades of Eric B with the beat and any song with chickens as the subject is already starting off with an unfair advantage.  I mean how can you go wrong with chicken?

4.  Sam Beam is from one of my adopted hometowns of Chapin SC.  Love the guitar and violin in this one.

7.  This is my favorite song so far.  Terrific guitar.

8.  Ok doh moment, I just got the double entendre of the mix.......doh!  Very clever!

9.  Birds they circle.  This sounds like a traditional folk song.  Is this one of those 150 plus year old songs?

11.  Love the Celtic influence in this.  Nice violin

18.  Always loved this tune, I mean how can you not?

19.  A segue within a mix within a mix.  Love doing those little 2 or 3 fer within a mix with some play on it.  Very nice.  Love this song too. If'n you gotta banjo I am probably going to love it.

Very nice and melancholy.  One to pull out when you want to chill and sunset or something.  Again very clever with the double meaning of the mix.  {#Clap}

Wow!
This fell off of the "Active List".
I  thought I would bump it back up.
Just got back from a birthday trip for the wife. Then had to work a 12 hour day today.

I will get a review up quickly I hope...

Gathering cover art now, hope to ship at the end of the week. That said...I've been a terrible mixtaper. I've heard all the disks lately and I owe everybody reviews. I had a very detailed one for Sirdroseph's set...then a poorly-timed bad mouse click lost the whole thing. But I had a great time listening to this and have clever and snarky things to say about it but I just don't have the time to recreate it. Miamiszun's Aussie mix remains a very entertaining disc. I enjoyed every single song and wasn't familiar with any of the bands. A total win. The Miser Mini Mix is a format that's really working. I like listening while working, where it will occasionally stop me in my tracks with the resonance of the themes. Love it. So mine's almost ready and I hope to loose it on the world soon. Sorry, been stupid busy with nonprofit stuff and a lot of projects are suffering. But I'm close.
