Just like freeway onramps in the western US: entering traffic has right of way. I gather it's different back east, and east coast drivers cause all kinds of problems out here by coming to a dead stop on onramps—tying up traffic behind them and on the highway as people try to get out of their way.

Where I grew up the on ramps on the main highway has on ramps about the length of the average driveway.  That's why we drive like that.  Even if there was an opening to merge into, you don't have enough time to get up to speed.  You're only hope is for someone to take pity on you.  Driving on the older east coast interstate system is taking your life in your hands.  US 22 in PA is still a huge thruway despite the addition of other roads.  They can't widen it and they can't really replace it, just try to  alleviate some of the through traffic.  Personally, I don't think I've been on it in 10 years.  There are other ways to get where I am going.

Knoxville got its first traffic circle a few years ago... just a single lane circle to replace a very congested four way stop.  Most people were still treating it like a four way stop after a year.  And then they'd get pissed off when you almost hit them.  It took awhile, but the concept did catch on.    And BDH and I were very amused (and very cautious) for quite awhile there.

Edit: we have a faction in city governments out here that hate cars, and will do anything they can to make it inconvenient to drive. One of their favorite tools is the traffic circle.

In the winter you can often follow tracks in the snow straight thru them, right over the top of the little curb in the center.

YMMV.

Dallas and Fort Worth are all of 30 minutes apart but the driving style couldn't be more different.  Dallas is very aggressive, every man for himself.  In Fort Worth people go out of their way to be helpful.  Sometimes too helpful.  You'll get to a four way stop and everyone is waving everyone else through.  It isn't unusual in Fort Worth for people to be driving the speed limit.  Or slower.  In Dallas you would get run off the road.  It is a culture shock to go from one city to the other.  Next door neighbors but worlds apart.

Where I used to live in France, they put in a lot of rond-points, and most of the time, they really do reduce traffic congestion. I seriously have big love for roundabouts.

Although the Blagojevich trial is no longer local for me, I get to follow it via the WGN superstation.

The latest is that one campaign contributor admired their hair.  I'm serious.  That's what they played in open court as "evidence".

So far the offense haven't managed to produce a single second of damning evidence from the many hours of Bush-era ("warrant? we don't need no stinkin' warrant!") wiretap tapes.

At this rate, Hell will be deep-frozen before the lying @$$hole persecutor who fscked-over the People of Illinois just to keep his cushy federal job will ever produce any real evidence...

I applaud your abilities but you've never really driven thru a dangerous circle or "roundabout" until you've driven in downtown Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Huge circles with 5-6 lanes of traffic going around and always numerous accidents,

A funny anecdote - when I first arrived in Riyadh (1979) on the way from the airport to my new digs I saw a large number of smashed vehicles, I mean totally demolished, placed on the side of the road and especially around the perimeters of traffic circles and some had banners written in Arabic on them.  When I mentioned to the driver I was surprised they didn't clear the accidents he expalined that it was "Safe Driving Week" and the wrecks were purposely placed to warn/remind people to drive safely.  It didn't work.
