Several hundred people have gathered in downtown Durham - several blocks from where I work - in response to rumors that there would be a KKK/White Supremacist protest, which was to be in response to the illegal removal of a Confederate monument by a crowd here a few days ago. There have apparently been no KKK types showing up. The crowd marched several blocks and now appears to be dispersing, according to news reports. Durham is a much larger city than Charlottesville, probably about 250K, and has a substantial police force (I can hear their motorcycles once in a while), but this gathering looks more like a party in some ways. No incidents that I've heard of - apparently a "peaceful" rally. Hopefully it will stay that way. It's really hot and humid today, so I don't know how much longer people will stay out there. There are a couple of news helicopters hovering around. Anyhow, it doesn't appear that they will impede my route home; after all, there's a bartender in my hometown (about 15 miles away), impatiently awaiting my arrival.

ACO Earhart responded and found a young kitten without the ability to escape from this predicament. Utilizing her prodigious knowledge and experience, ACO Earhart requested help from Sergeant Hammer with the Harrisonburg Police Department, as well as from H'burg Public Works. Together, ACO Earhart, three members of H'burg Public Works, and Sergeant Hammer were able to remove the exceedingly heavy grate over the storm drain and set a trap to attempt to save the kitten. Because no human would be able to enter the storm drain safely, ACO Earhart ingeniously tied a rope to the handle of the trap, and with the help of Public Works, set the trap. ACO Bechtel was informed of the situation and after securing a friendly Husky at the R'ham-H'burg SPCA, received a call for another loose Husky in the road in the area of Port Republic Road and Forest Hill Drive. ACO Bechtel, after a very recent encounter with skunk, was able to smell skunk spray from nearly a mile away while responding to find the new loose Husky. ACO Bechtel found said Husky and found that the adventurous girl had climbed to freedom, then found what she thought was a friendly black and white cat. After making sure the fragrant Husky was safe in his vehicle, ACO Bechtel responded to the storm drain, due to a recent rain, and found that the trapped kitten had indeed been lured into the trap ACO Earhart had set. ACO Bechtel, holding the trap suspended by rope with one hand, balancing on one foot, was able to pull the heavy grate aside with his other hand, removing the kitten from the drain. The fragrant and adventurous Husky's family was found and ACO Bechtel returned her to her family before taking the kitten to the R'ham-H'burg SPCA.

We recently subscribed to a neighborhood networking site we were invited to join by our homeowner's association. Today a member uploaded an image of a cat asking if he belonged to anyone. I didn't recognize the cat, but took the opportunity to make the neighborhood aware that we have been practicing TNR for several years. The response was quite positive.
Lack of faith in humanity ever so slightly lessened.
