The humor is a bit crass, yeah.  Then again, it seems to be human nature to use humor as a tool to deal with that which makes us uncomfortable.  Auto-eroticism of any sort surely falls into that category, and all the more so as it falls further outside the norm. 

As Randy said, too bad Carradine will be remembered for this—but I would not say this "way he chose to leave" the world.  I'd say accidents happen, and it sounds as if this was surely one.
