For you Republic users, are you pretty happy?

Hub and I need to change our family plan - we are lucky to use 150 mins a month between us (not big phone talkers) but becasue we have no internet at home our data numbers are always periously close to going over at the end of each month.   We dumped land lines and internet so we are dependant on the cells and wonder about Replublic's coverage.  We're in Tampa - ton's of towers here but we travel a bit.

seems to be a lot of buzz about google fi mobile service

the phones on google fi are nice but pretty expensive (between six and seven hundred dollars)

then there's the actual service (see below)

i personally use republic wireless (for the last year or so) and have been pleased with the service (they, like google fi, use sprint's network)

technica has a breakdown here

10¢ times the amount of minutes I use to call a pizza in from the road or use to call Zevon to set my Fantasy baseball lineup during a power outage. {#Lol}

Two lines, shared 450 min/mon (with rollover, currently around 5000 minutes). One line with text package. Each line 200mb data. $98 total.

Every time we upgrade our phones, we pay for the devices, rather than take the minutes plan offered, which would increase our monthly costs over the life of the contract. It saves us a lot of money in the long run. They don't even offer 450 minute plans anymore. And we use about, oh, I don't know - under 20 minutes total per month. The thing is, we're home together, and use WiFi as much as possible. Hardly power users.

for three lines with unlimited talk/text/data our bill is about $235 with all fees and taxes.  I get a stipend from my work of $150/month since one of the lines is my work cell.

Odd to be excited about a $140 phone bill.

American wireless customers pay more for less speed?

All LTE isn't equal, but US carriers are a raw deal

Wireless speed doesn’t come cheap for Americans and Japanese, who pay through the nose for wireless service in exchange for some of the worst-performing LTE networks in the world. That’s the takeaway of new data from Ookla, which gathered performance stats worldwide using its Android and iOS Speedtest.net apps. Whereas US carriers, on average, offered disappointing 13.2 megabit per second (Mbps) download speeds on LTE over the course of 2013, carriers in countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK delivered speeds nearly two to three times faster. In fact, out of the 40 countries with the most LTE tests in 2013, the US offered slower speeds than all of them, with the exception of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and India. Japan didn’t fare much better, just one slot faster than the US.

But it’s the cost that makes these speeds particularly painful to swallow. On average, Verizon charged roughly $4.05 per Mbps of LTE download speed in 2013, compared to just $2.25 for UK carrier EE. Of all the major international carriers we compared, every one of them except Japan’s NTT Docomo were about half as expensive as Verizon. While we only compared the largest carriers in some key countries for this report, Verizon isn’t the only carrier in the US where speed comes at a premium: AT&T comes to $3.93, while Sprint — with its nascent and slow LTE network — averages to a whopping $7.50 per Mbps.

I think it depends on where you live.  I've never had problems with Verizon & never heard a complaint about them from people here, but I have heard complaints about them in other areas...

{#No}  It's no where near flat here.  We are at the southern end of the rockies.  There are a few small "dead" areas that we know about.  They are in places that a hill/mountain is blocking the nearest tower.  In the vast majority of the area we get clear service and never lose a call (unless I don't hang up before driving behind that mountain between here & Los Alamos {#Lol} ).

My sprint bill varies around $130/mo.  But that's for a phone with full data capabilities ($30/mo) and a separate data card ($60/mo.).  If you subtract all of the data services, my Fair and Flexible 300 plan (I don't make many voice calls on it) would come to about $40/mo.

BTW, I've heard lots of people badmouth Sprint reception, and want to say that in the 10 years that I've had Sprint service, I've never had any serious reception issues with them.  And the minor issues are quickly rectified by being mindful that I'm talking on a radio, and doing things to improve radio reception, like making sure that the phone's antenna is not covered up, and moving slightly to find a better signal.

I have Alltel.  My Mom is on my account and it cost about $70/month for both of us.  I am pleased with the service quality, can't remeber the last time I had a dropped call.

We never use all the "metered minutes" and I make all my LD calls with the cell, it's "free".  I have considered getting rid of my landline but haven't made the jump yet.
