That's frickin cool.
EDIT: oh. and I play harder. Seriously.
MrsA (hospice social worker) has been seeing a counselor who does energy and archetype work, and learning how to "ask for help" from the Universe: sort of a battery recharge when she needs it. Cause the work you types do can be very draining of the spirit. ALWAYS gotta make sure you're getting charged back up.  . For now, I'm working on putting me first this year. Writing that was a huge step. I never brag. It felt good   Â

through a glass darkly..
ok I haven't seen the vid but from the comments I'd be in agreement. Work, even the shitty sides of it is edifying (no I was NOT born in the 19 C)
Maybe it is the armchair Marxist in me coming out or just my years of experience (35 different jobs and counting) but work in some way is an act of self-actualization, even the shitty jobs l've done like washing dishes. In fact there is little difference in the substance of work between highly paid professional stuff done to tight deadlines and washing dishes in a busy restaurant. It's the way you interact with your environment that counts.
In fact I think that is all that counts.

Arnold Palmer said "The harder you work, the luckier you get".
It's my creed and it makes sense to me. Hard work puts you square in the path of opportunity. The more opportunities you have, the more paydays you have.

Alexandra wrote:The idea of 'following your bliss' is stupid. Work isn't always fun, and there are a lot of people who need to learn that lesson.
I totally get this guy's point, but this statement is a wee bit extreme for me. I think the whole idea behind following your bliss isn't that you shouldn't have to work hard, or choose lower-paying careers, or not be willing to work at McDonalds as a teen or whatever. It just means that one should be sure that they're doing SOMETHING in their life that makes them happy—be it an ideally-matched career, a creative outlet, or a way of living that previously was inhibited or undiscovered. Switching to a career or job that one likes more than the one he or she had to leave (because it was sucking the life out of them, making them ill, and ruining their family life) doesn't necessarily mean going to something where they won't be earning good money or carrying their weight in society. I've changed careers three times in my life, fine-tuning just what it was that I wanted to spend most of my day doing, and was always able to pay my own bills and support myself. Hard work can even be fun and gratifying. Anyway....my two cents. Maybe I oversimplified that a bit. But what I was trying to get through is that work takes effort. That is why they call it work. I'm invovled with way too many people who think that work for them should be a joyfull experience where they get to follow whatever whim is on their mind at the moment, and the hard labor is for the other guys. When I expect performance out of them they get grupmy and act like I'm impeding the fulfillment of their dreams. You should get satisfaction out of your work because you have acomplished something. If you are truly miserable in your job, by all means please move on and let some one else take the position. In the end it is up to YOU (the larger you, not Alexandra) to either come to terms with it, or to make the change. There are a lot of jobs, and all of them have value. Maybe if we all recognized that, people would be more willing to go try the 'dirty job' and not be so focused on being something they really are not.

I've never had a job in my adult life. That is, I've never been in someone else's employ. I have worked damned hard all my life. I have made it on my own through earnest dedication.
While living as a nomadic hunter/gatherer for 7 years in the Rockies my entire yearly cash need was $200. This was for hay for my horses and bullets for my guns. I made knives from old rasps-files and car leaf springs, set the tang in deer antler, decorated the sheath of brain tanned buckskin with porcupine quillwork. Sold these for the cash to buy the needed items.
For a number of years I was a jeweler with my own shop in Santa Fe. My familiarity with working iron, from the aforementioned knife making skills, led me to make silver stamps for some of the tribal silversmiths. From there I began stamping my own silver and graduated to jewelry fabrication. Further on down the road I began setting precious gems in gold in styles of my own creation.
Having spent many of those years as the Shaman's Apprentice, I moved into the dedication of full time Shamanizing upon the passing of my predecessor and mentor, my Grampa Pena, as it fell to me to be the Caretaker of this Shamanic lineage. From that time in 1982 I have been making my services available to all who ask for help. While I do get paid for my services, I never have and never would turn away a person who is in sincere need of help because they don't have 'X' number of dollars in their pocket. My avocation is my vocation. And sometimes it is my vacation, as when I take groups of people to Peru for the experiencing of the ceremonials of the Peruvian Shamans of the Andes and Amazon.
Work? I don't know the meaning of the word. I just call it 'Life'.
