Brenda Spencer School Shooting 30 Years Ago Today (January 29, 1979)

Thirty years ago today, 16-year-old Brenda Spencer opened fire on children at a San Carlos elementary school. Her reason for the deadly attack? She didn't like Mondays.

Bob Geldof wrote the song "I dont like Mondays" after reading a report on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children playing in a school playground across the street from her home in San Diego, California. She killed two adults and injured eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays, this livens up the day.".

Man smears feces on his lawyer, flings it at jury

Wed Jan 28, 9:11 pm ET

SAN DIEGO – A San Diego judge has declared a mistrial in a kidnapping and assault case after the defendant smeared excrement on his lawyer's face and threw it at jurors. The judge boosted defendant Weusi McGowan's bail from $250,000 to $1 million after the Monday incident.

Prosecutor Christopher Lawson says McGowan was upset because the judge refused to remove public defender Jeffrey Martin from the case.

McGowan had smuggled a bag of feces into court and spread it on Martin's hair and face before flinging the excrement at jurors. No jurors were hit.

McGowan has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and other counts in connection with a 2007 home invasion.

Yeah, and a requirement is that we all can only post  comments and responses that fit in with Beaker's POV. That would be fun!

{#Whisper}  The Patrick Fitzgerald in this case is not a judge, so he doesn't have a courtroom.  This Patrick Fitzgerald is employed by the scandal-ridden US Department of Justice.  Also, straight shooters don't tell whopping lies before news cameras.

If Fitz does not get a felony conviction, the legislature is going to look like a bunch of pikers.

No kidding!  And since the federal code doesn't have many misdemeanor options, I'll bet that Fitzgerald is praying hard that the threatened (by the GOP before the election) terrorist attack against Obama happens soon, to distract the world as he slips away like a thief in the night...

Patrick Fitzgerald is a straight shooter and I have had the pleasure of being in his courtroom, but I get the impression he is in deep water here. I think a conviction on anything significant is a 50-50 proposition at best. Fitz needs 12 jurors and Blago needs 1. It will not be hard for the (ex) governor to make his case in court. He is populist and charismatic, and performs well in settings like courtrooms.

If Fitz does not get a felony conviction, the legislature is going to look like a bunch of pikers.

Reporter:  "Did you ever consider resigning?"

Blagojevich:  "No, I did not."

Sadly he probably was forced to be "fired" so that he can collect unemployment insurance.  No matter how you feel about him, his two young daughters are innocent, and deserve at least the basics in life.

Rod Blagojevich is holding a news conference right now.  He seems renewed, like a great weight has been lifted from his shoulders.  He's in very good spirits, sharing his stage with local children who wanted to get on TV.  He's speaking coherently, and not over-emotionally.  Mighty gracious in defeat.

BTW, for those who have ridiculed him about his hair: he has a big scar on his forehead that extends down to the bridge of his nose, and almost to his left eye.  You can see the bottom of that scar clearly.  I imagine that if he didn't wear his hair that way, that people would look at him like he was a cyclops.

Frankly, he got my sympathy with that speech and I really agree with him.
