Durham has a ton of panhandlers.  Apparently as long as they wear a reflective vest (I'm assuming the city gives these to them, but I'm not sure), they can hang out at all the interstate exit ramps.  I saw one of them get picked up by their ride at the end of the day (in a nice BMW). And another day while at the red light I saw a nicely dressed woman walk up to one of the regulars— he handed her a BIG wad of bills and then she walked off— no idea what was going on with that.  But I also get really annoyed.  There is a rescue mission here that would give them a place to stay, feed them, and help them find work... AS LONG AS they don't drink or do drugs.  Too many strikes and you're out.  I know alcohol/drug addiction and mental illness (which I'm sure has a huge part in this) is another thing altogether, but you have to want to help yourself before I'm going to want to help you, ya know?  I had a box of pizza left over from a school event— I was taking it home. I decided to give it to one of the panhandlers at the interstate exit.  He took it, but he looked at me like he was pissed off about it.  Oh and one last thing— they leave a TON of trash out there.  I really get pissed at the city of Durham for not doing something about it.  If they're going to allow panhandlers all over the city, harassing people at every interstate exit, at least make them pick up their garbage.

I gotta say that at least 80% of the people there were mentally ill.   A high percentage of them were addicts but seriously, ALOT of these people are ill.   Doesnt make it any nicer to have them asking for $$, but. . . . .

I used to own a recycling center. I've seen crazy and it's a shame, but crazy people don't vote( although the 2004 election REALLY  made me wonder {#Lol}) and so their problems aren't adressed.

Yep. Lot's of jurisdictions in Florida just put small time criminals on the Greyhound with a warning to not come back. {#Yes}

I like that it is specifically 75 cents.  What an odd amount.  I've often wondered where they come up with the amount they want to ask for.

It's less than a dollar.  It's the psychology of asking for an amount that's small, but still enough to get something, like a soft drink or a hamburger.  If someone asks for a quarter, you'd think "What the hell can you get with a quarter?  This person must be asking for money from everyone."  But if asked for a buck, most people might think that's a presumptuous amount.

does that mean he didn't need to do laundry?

(i have to use quarters to do my wash, and i horde them...when i start to run low, i consider creative ways to get more quarters without having to drive to the bank....panhandling is not something i have considered, but this guy seems to have a good idea!)

No, it is very unlikely to happen to me, since I have some assets, family and friends. Unlikely but not impossible. And, I'm sure you're right about some of the panhandlers having plenty of money. Panhandling is their "job" and it may very well be a good living! {#Tongue}

{#Yes} Why not .77 cents or .49? Close to a dollar I spose'.

You're not a dumbass.  My grandfather had a rule about panhandlers... "If they're lying, shame on them.  But if I meet a person who is truly starving and I pass them by, then shame on me.  I'm willing to take the chance so the guy who's really hungry gets something to eat."
