As to what we would do whilst we would love to do the road trip thing sometime definitely not with a 4 and 6 year old- they love trains though so it can be a nice way to travel as they can move around a bit. What we would do would be something along the lines of fly to New York (possibly with Continental as they offer good prices from our local airport). We'd spend a day or two there recovering with Uncle Roger and then probably head onto a house swap in order to save Uncle Roger's sanity. Whilst we'd be pretty open minded about where we went the rockies is certainly a good possibility. HJ and I have been talking vaguely about somewhere in the US next year and with littke kids heat is a factor as is distance There are a lot of home exchange houses available there, especially in Colorado so we'd be fairly put once we got there (no doubt we would swap cars too). SO I was particularly interested in tacking on an affordable extension onto our transatlantic flights as last time I looked at doing something like this it was the internal flights that broke the camel's back price wise- flights to New York are often good value. you should be able to get a flight from NY to Denver for about $300 round trip PP. Southwest is a good airline for cheap prices and are very accommodating when making changes to your plans. I"m not 100% sure that Southwest flies to denver, but their website should be able to answer that easily. the flight should take about 4 hours if it's a direct flight. connecting flights can add many hours to your travels, depending on layover times. sometimes it's worth the extra money for the direct flights.

Well if you set up camp anywhere near Denver we'd come down there (it's only 600 miles away) since we have friends in Golden and Denver has a baseball team*. *Sort of

To no one's surprise, I'm going to disagree with HC (again). Renting a car isn't worth the trouble in many US large cities. Traffic is horrid. Parking impossible to find. And the overnight parking fees at hotels are equal to a nice steak dinner. I love a good roadtrip so am all about traveling by car but it really depends on what part of the country you are interested in seeing. By the time you factor in car rental, gas, insurance, food along the way, and hotel expense it is often cheaper to fly.

What are the best methods of travelling around the US? For example if we were to travel from Europe is it best to travel with the same carrier onto our eventual airport or should we hop off once we get to New York (where we'd be visiting family anyway) and then use a low cost carrier to travel on. How about the rail- is it affordable.
How long does it take to fly from the East coast to mountain country? Enquiring minds want to know. I'm idly thinking about next year (this year is choca already) so don't get too excited!!

The definitive answer is: it depends. Seriously, the US is so big and so varied that it totally depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. You ask how far from East Coast to mountains - that depends on which mountains you want to get to. In the large cities like New York, Boston, D.C. it is easiest and cheapest to use public transportation. But if you want to see the vast middle of the country - nothing beats renting a car and roadtripping through small town USA. I think your best bet is to narrow your focus, decide where you want to visit and what kind of vacation you want. Then I'm sure everybody will give you more advice than you want to wade through on the best way to experience the 'States. To answer your question about trains - between major cities on the East Coast it can be a good option. However, for visiting the rest of the country it is fun and adventurous but completely unreliable. Passenger trains are a pretty low priority so you can be delayed for hours up to days while higher priority trains pass. If you have the time, you'll meet interesting people. But for most people it isn't practical. Obviously, there are specific routes that are more reliable than others.
Let me know if you have specific questions - we travel quite a bit and I am rather obsessed with getting "a good deal" so I have files on a variety of cities.

HC is right, this is car country. You can get up and down the east coast from Boston to DC easily by train, but getting further west than that is time-consuming and uncomfortable. Greyhound buses are much the same way; on the other hand, if you have the time and the inclination, it can be a great way to see the country. There are often flight deals for furriners, where you can have a certain number of flights to anywhere in the country for a certain price. I'll try to rumble up a link. And getting from the east coast to the mountains (the Rockies, I presume?) wouldn't take too long, I imagine. Four hours? Five? Edit: Here's a whole bunch of good info for you.
