MrsHobieJoe wrote:I will certainly ask. We use trailfinders when we go continental usually but in Europe the low cost carriers aren't covered by the travel agents so you get quite independent and the prices are excellent- you just need to have a big map in your minds eye when considering the various options. We are flying to Stockhom and Helsinki later this year and knew the options to look at to get good prices but it's difficult when it's a different country and you don't know the distances and different places to look up. I aim to get discounts for everything when we travel now that we are 4! Anyhow thanks to everyone for the advice. I am bookmarking the various airlines and webpages mentioned and signing up for their email discounts. Jetblue looks particularly promising. Much appreciated You're very welcome. :) If I were flying to Europe, I'd certainly need some inside help. So, I know what you mean about a different country. edit: Z loves the private television at every seat. He hates losing contact with espn. He's a sports geek extraordinaire.

I'd prefer to do one bit properly and if we go to Yellowstone we may as well go and see the Big Titties and the Bighorns and Glacier National Parks as well. Actually really I'd prefer to sit and read a book whilst looking at a nice view whilst you fish in a peaceful lake and the kids wear themselves out in a big garden (and the kids would prefer that too).
A travel agent would probably serve you best. In the US, there's no fee to use them - I don't know if it's the same over there. A couple traveling here from Russia couldn't do better than $2500 each, and the agent found them tickets for $700 each.

Sorry, sudden burst of grandiosity. OTOH, a four year old Charlie would be a very different sprog....he was pretty civilised on our boys bonding trip the other day.

Frontier flies from NY to Denver, as does Jetblue. They're two of Z's preferences, and he flies across the country almost frequently. If I was flying out of NY to a destination of my choice, I'd choose somewhere that Virgin America goes. I haven't flown them yet, but what I've read about their standard seating has caused me to want to do so. They're offering super low prices right now. You can sign up for e-mail offers from any of the airlines. Each week, they'll send a list of, and a link to, the current deals they're offering.

Could always do the open-jaw thing - maybe fly to Vangroovy, visit family and friends, then road trip through the mountains, maybe fly over the flat bits to NY, see Uncle Roger, then home. Or New Orleans via NY to see Uncle Bud and family, then RT up through Texas, Arizona, NM, up to Denver/Wyoming (love the kids to see Yellowstone, regardless of which state it may or may not be in)

Thanks for the link- they seem to have a pretty good coverage.
Hmmm, $1741 with them on random dates in August for the 4 of us (although they fly from Long Island via Baltimore so I guess it's time to look at the other airlines)- I also need to figure out which airports are reasonably accessible from NY apart from the obvious ones. That's what I meant about feeling a bit stupid when I price these things up- it always seems to add up to big numbers even allowing for the foreign exchange rate. Although that would have seem a lot more reasonable this time last year! That's a similar price to what we would pay to fly from the UK to Newark.
Of course this is a first take- further research needed.
you have to shop for price and timing is everything. I go through orbitz and find that if I book about 5 to 6 weeks in advance, I get the best price. to test this, put in your destination on different days and see how the price pattern goes. You'll see a dramatic drop about 5 weeks before and then it goes back up about 2 or 3 weeks before. anyway, it's a good way to figure out what the cheapest price is. Have you considered a travel agent? tell them you want the cheapest prices and let them do the work.

I'll bet the HJs could travel coast to coast and never have to get a room. Hell yes. I've already done, it although in another life, in 1988, aged 19. Montreal - Vancouver by Viarail, in the cheapseats, then my ex's dad bought an old Dodge van with a pull-out bed and no aircon for $1,000 to use preparing for a sailing race from Quebec at the end of the month, and off we set, Penticton, Spokane, Yellowstone, Bear Tooth Pass, I90, Chicago, New York, Boston Maine Quebec and NY again. Hell of a trip.

AliGator wrote:HC is right, this is car country. You can get up and down the east coast from Boston to DC easily by train, but getting further west than that is time-consuming and uncomfortable. Greyhound buses are much the same way; on the other hand, if you have the time and the inclination, it can be a great way to see the country. There are often flight deals for furriners, where you can have a certain number of flights to anywhere in the country for a certain price. I'll try to rumble up a link. And getting from the east coast to the mountains (the Rockies, I presume?) wouldn't take too long, I imagine. Four hours? Five? Edit: Here's a whole bunch of good info for you. That is, flying. Driving would be much longer, prolly a 2-3 day car trip, esp if you want to sight see
