Alex Chilton is a pop genius. "September Gurls" by Big Star gots the greatest ringing guitar riff ever, one that would make Peter Buck of R.E.M. die of envy. The riff powers a punchy yet melancholy melody that remains one of rock and roll's greatest moments.

ok, so this is so cliche but Springsteen's Born to Run puts me in a car, windows down, radio cranked, driving to the shore.
Actually, most any of the early springsteen tunes will do it- 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy), Backstreets, Wild Billy's Circus Story, Kitty's Back... especially the sound of the accordian breathes the Jersey Shore in the summer during the 70s.

Queen: We are the Champions
1976. I'm 15 years old and we just won the softball championship during summer league. My friend had a Trans Am and we packed the car with girls and drove off with that song blaring...

{#High-five} good call there, MB

Though he certainly didn't hold a candle to his dad, Julian Lennon's "Too Late for Goodbye" contained a pretty catchy little hook.

GREAT THREAD SCOTT!!

Iggy Pop's The Passenger.

My first trip to Istanbul, we'd been out all night and it was early in the morning.  My brother's friend was driving on the road that parallels the Bosphorus River and the Passenger came on his player.  It was a perfect moment in an amazing new place.  Every time I hear that song, I think of that ride.

I read this as "Great Scott, thread!"

More than four years ago, I posted this in the song comments on Bowie's "Heroes."

Middle of the night. Two or three a.m. Middle of Washington—Ritzville. Halfway back to an unhappy home, five hundred miles gone and five hundred to go. Still tasting the kisses of the woman I wished I was with but knew it was never, ever gonna be. Perkins. Coffee. And this song, of all damned things, on the restaurant PA. My god.

It's still true, today.  I'm right back in the restaurant—and into the few hours before that moment—every time I hear the song.

Not so much a riff as a drone. . . .
