creeper trail snake

Saw this lovely one on the Virginia Creeper Trail last Monday. He/She had some kind of injury,... you can see the scuff mark pretty well. Probably got hit by a bike. I don't think he/she was poisonous... had circular pupils instead of slits. Thought it was a copperhead first, but after looking at the eyes, I don't think so. I guess it's some kind of water snake. These guys are regulars on the bridges of the Creeper Trail, especially when the sun is shining.

I'm not smart enough to figure out how to change the background color... red was fine with me

  It's a bit hard to tell the real shape of the head, but otherwise that looks like a copperhead to me. Or maybe a cottonmouth. I think they must be related: we printed out a bunch of pictures of both off the web, and the variations in coloration were very similar. Copperheads are usually pretty small, fairly thin, cottonmouths are thicker and grow larger. Both tend to stay near water.

Great pic, regardless!

the colors on the caterpillar are outstanding. Do you think they got "blown in" by a storm? or migrating? that is so wild!
where are they common to? (I'm guessing southern states?)

WOW

No, they don't seem to migrate far but do occur in every U.S. state except Arizona and Nevada and in every Canadian province except Newfoundland and PEI.

On a ride on Hornby Island a couple of weeks ago, I spent 10 minutes watching a huge pileated woodpecker feed in the woods, about 15 metres away. Didn't have the cam with me, though, unfortunately.

Imagine that, a kid-friendly RP thread!

Walter Lanz's cartoon critter, Woody Woodpecker, was supposedly modeled on the Pileated Woodpecker.

WOW- that is incredibly amazing. I can't believe the colors. Are these normal where you are?

No, they're not common.  I don't recall ever seeing one of the moths and the caterpillar on my lawn was the first I've seen.  With such a short adult life, the moths aren't around long to see, though. {#Frown}

Thanks.  I've learned that the Cecropia Moth has a wingspan of nearly six inches (150mm).  The adult moth has no mouth parts and lives 7-10 days, just long enough to mate and lay eggs.
