Antigone wrote:Thanks for the input, HS and MrsHBJ. I really like the idea of a fan in the kitchen but I'm not sure it will work in the space (narrow, galley kitchen with normal height ceilings). This particular fan isn't as wide as many so it might work, but, as I think CCrider pointed out, it would get dirty very quickly in the kitchen. And, I ruled out #2 because it's halogen. Still thinking about it. I've got to replace about a million cabinet hinges first to match the new drawer pulls and knobs ... gas or electric stove? I hate my kitchen fan. I can't use it when I need it most. it blows around the gas flame.

Antigone wrote:Thanks, Leslie. I have an old 48 inch fluorescent fixture that looks like a school cafeteria! I think the last one pictured would cover whatever is under the old one, but the idea of a fan in the kitchen ... It's a galley style kitchen, so that might not work. I have the same galley layout with a single industrial grade 48" florescent shop light. The worst part of it is that the light is in the center of the galley, which means that you create a shadow no matter where you are in the kitchen. I was thinking about using the center j-box for that light to split the power to some sort of track lights or hanging fixtures that are right over the counters. Mine is also the main light for the kitchen and adjoining family room, so I've got to find something bright enough to light that area too. I've thought about doing recessed lights, but the ceiling is vaulted, and that would be a royal PITA to run the power to the cans. The search continues...

Antigone wrote:Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. Yeah, greasy, grimy metal fan ... And you're right about the middle one being halogen bulbs. Too bad, as I like that funky look. The rectangular one was my first choice as it's similar to what's there now. Cable lights are an interesting thought, OV, though I wonder if they'd provide enough light. This is the main light in the room and since the kitchen is centrally located it's sometimes the only light on in the whole house. Well, they're also halogen, but as for light they have plenty. It doesn't fill up like you need for a kitchen, though. There are dome florescent clouds, some with deco -like trim like you pictured before.

The middle one appears to use halogen bulbs. Not a huge deal really, but people seem to be getting away from them. They make a nice white light, but get VERY hot and are not really all that efficient.
Selecting light fixtures is a special kind of hell for me. What I like is usually super-expensive. And the fiancee refuses to let me make chandeliers from leftover plumbing fixtures. What to do, what to do?

My front porch light is a galvanized bucket, oblong, with a pendant vapor-tight fixture mounted inside. The thing I hate about exterior fixtures is all the bugs that get into 'em. On the outside, ok fine, nothing I can do. But inside? NO. So I found a source for vapor-tights that isn't too outrageous, and make all of my exterior fixtures from them. Plus I like the industrial look of the glass jar with a cage around it. Inside, I keep thinking I'll make a similar setup over the pool table (if I ever get it set up!). Three vapor-tights connected with galvanized pipe, and round shades over 'em to project the light onto the table. Dial 'em in so the centers are exactly lined up with the dots on the pool table, of course. The dining room chandelier? Who knows.

What about some low voltage cable lighting on a dimmer. They're really a cool looking option.
