I can vouch for this idea. Got us out of a pickle, I'm just feeling slightly guilty that some of SFW's beer might have ended up warmer than it should've done after we snaffled half of his frozen water.

And don't an awful lot of PET water bottles end up as Polartec©®™ clothing?

I forwarded your link about a glass crusher to the City and they're seriously looking at it. If those people are looking at paying it off in less than a year, and they only pay $30 a ton in tipping fees, well at our $97/ton rate it's almost not a question of whether or not to do it. Plus the city buys tons and tons of sand each year, just for spreading on ice.

I work for a guy who arranges loans for cities and municipalities to purchase recycling equipment. Seriously.

Usually they don't want the caps on. Different type of plastic. And yeah, it does get re-used but bottles for water are all made from virgin plastic. At least look for the ones that are super-thin.

Best use for store-bought water bottles: Freeze them and use in your camping cooler. Doesn't get everything wet like ice does, and hey, cold water to drink. You can use refilled bottles but I'm never sure the seal will always hold. Make sure the bottles have some of those accordion pleats in them so they don't burst when they freeze.

Just heard today that our local recycling center will no longer take glass. Don't even get me started...

No use.  Then we'd spend too much time filling up water bottles for traveling.  I usually have one in the truck but Sue has at least three everywhere she goes.  I also keep a case in the fridge in the pole barn.  It's just grocery store filtered water and it's cheap enough.  Works out well for us.  We probably drink a couple cases a week.

I wonder how much money would have to be on the table for you to need to go to a promotional celebration in your honor that was going to end with a partnership, new car, membership to the elite country club, before you broke down and hired that dude as a babysitter because your regular girl had the chicken pox?
