The band was TIGHT (go figure) and the funk/soul arrangements are REALLY good. I hope they put out a dvd or album from this tour.
Oh yeah, I sat two rows behind and three seats left of the control pit so the view and sound were perfect. And I really wish I'd had a camera because the smoke from the fireworks (ball game at the same time as the concert) looked exactly like a dragon floating over downtown, from behind the stage, before it blew off down the river.
I'm glad to see they chose from their A list and omitted most of the garbage produced in their self-proclaimed "dark ages".

Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders on Friday night at the Warner Theater. She's 57 and still a rock goddess. Great young guitarist and Martin still around on drums. But, Chrissie . . . man, Chrissie, she commands and demands.
Cat Power played the middle set. She has this strange way of moving around the stage (not catlike, either; more soporific) and the stage lights are never on her, so she's almost in silhouette. Her vocal stylings certainly are unique, but not sure I enjoyed a whole set from her.
Front act was Juliette Lewis. New to me, but she rocks. Attempts bit of Janis Joplin and does not come off badly.
See Chrissie and the Pretenders.
the actress??
anyway, i'm jealous of the rest. chrissie, cat power...wow. glad you enjoyed it!

R and I took a little road trip to Loiusville last night to see one of my favorite touring club bands - J. Roddy Walston and the Business. When they were Tennessee-based, I used to see them all the time, but since they've moved to Baltimore, I only get to see them once a year or so. It was a great show. Completely electric. The crowd was hopping and dancing the whole show and it was in a tiny little backroom. I included a youtube vid from some other show of theirs. You can't really make out the words (sound quality), but it gives you a good idea of what kind of showmen they are. If you live in the Northeast, you have plenty of chances to see them - and I highly recommend doing so.
The sound is pretty bad at first. Sort of white noise-ish. If you just want a taste, tune in at about the 2:20 mark and watch for a bit.
sigh ... sure enjoyed the cowboy junkies last night at the wiltern ... who knew such beautiful music could come out of a mandolin ...
"Mandolins evolved from the lute family in Italy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the deep bowled mandolin produced particularly in Naples became a common type in the nineteenth century. The original instrument was the mandore which evolved in the fourteenth century from the lute. As time passed and the instrument spread around Europe, it took on many names and various structural characteristics."
if you combine a mandore and a violin you get a mandolin ... get it?
david grissman has an excellent acoustic series ...http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:giftxqwhldke
oh ... the girl singing last night was ok too ... maggie or something like that
