The audacious reboot of the James Bond franchise paid off big with 2006's Casino Royale, and now Quantum of Solace (Sony) has hit an even bigger box-office jackpot. Whereas Daniel Craig's 007 debut opened with $40.8 million, the new Bond, which picks up where Royale left off, will better that mark by almost $30 million, with $70.4 million at U.S. theaters. That is a 72 percent increase. In fact, Quantum of Solace has opened about 50 percent better than the previous biggest Bond opening, Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day in 2002, which started with $47.1 million. Sources are telling me that weekend audiences in the U.S. for Quantum were 54 percent male and 46 percent female, and the franchise skewed a bit old with 58 percent of ticket buyers over 25. The word-of-mouth will be very good for this excellent film and, for my money, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace are the two best James Bond films ever. As I wrote on Thursday, these two movies are to the Bond franchise, what Batman Begins and The Dark Knight turned out to be for the Batman franchise. Quantum of Solace began opening in overseas territories on Oct. 31. Now, including its meteoric domestic opening, the film has banked $322 million from 73 territorie. And that's with openings still to come in lucrative territories like Japan, Australia and Spain. In my estimation, the newest Bond will easily be the biggest 007 ever. It should become the first movie in the franchise to top $200 million domestic, and $700 million worldwide would seem to be a reasonable target. Meanwhile Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (DreamWorks/Paramount) received a hippo-sized boost from its $8.1 million Friday, more than doubling that number for a $16.9 million Saturday. After adding a projected $11.1 million Sunday, Escape 2 Africa will have a new 10-day cume of $118 million, ranking as the all-time fourth-best 10-day total for a non-summer animated film opening on a non-holiday. Amazingly, M:E2A has a better domestic total after 10 days than this summer's DreamWorks Animation smash Kung Fu Panda, which checked in with $117.2 million at the same point in its release cycle. There is no question now that Escape 2 Africa will finish as the all-time biggest grossing non-Shrek movie in the history of Dreamorks Animation, and $220 million-$225 million domestic is possible.

I haven't seen it - though it looks like an interesting film. Certainly, the critics seem to like it - it has a 63% t-meter score at Rotten Tomatoes, with a solidly positive consensus that makes me want to see it - if not in the theater, when it comes out on DVD or onto cable. Consensus: A touching and haunting family film that deals with the Holocaust in an arresting and unusual manner, and packs a brutal final punch of a twist.

SEASON TO DATE STANDINGS My studio moves into a tie for 1st with CptBuz's, though our time at the top will be short lived, as Quantum of Solace opens this weekend and all moguls except for NWG (WaveRunner), CptBuz and me have it on their slates. Certain to be a blockbuster, it should be interesting to see how it affects studio performances. Shaken, not stirred, I expect.

This is occurring again this week. Possibly there is some automated process that isn't running correctly? Anyway, if you could repair it as before, the league members would appreciate it. Thanks Tom ——- Original Message ——- From: removed To: removed Sent: 11/4/2008 10:45:06 AM Subject: Re: Ultimate Moguls Stats Issue
Hello, Thanks for taking care of this last week! Unfortunately, it appears the same issue is happening again this week. (PTA and Top 5 stats showing on the individual studio pages, but not showing up on the League Summary pages.) Don't forget to vote today :) Thanks Tom

It will be interesting to see how this weekends results play out in our league standings. And congratulations in advance to those who chose Quantum of Solace for their slates. Bastids. FINAL 3-DAY ESTIMATES 1. High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Disney) — $15 million, $4,137 PTA, $61.7 million cume 2. NEW Zack and Miri Make a Porno (Weinstein) — $10.68 million, $3,905 PTA, $10.68 million cume 3. Saw V (Lionsgate) — $10.11 million, $3,278 PTA, $45.83 million cume 4. Changeling (Universal) — $9.41 million, $5,086 PTA, $10.08 million cume 5. NEW The Haunting of Molly Hartley (Freestyle) — $6 million, $2,262 PTA, $6 million cume 6. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (Disney) — $4.75 million, $1,581 PTA, $84.06 million cume 7. The Secret Life of Bees (Fox Searchlight) — $4 million, $2,483 PTA, $25.28 million cume 8. Max Payne (20th Century Fox) — $3.7 million, $1,443 PTA, $35.55 million cume 9. Eagle Eye (DreamWorks/Paramount) — $3.4 million, $1,694 PTA, $92.53M 10. Pride and Glory (Warner Bros.) — $3.26 million, $1,261 PTA, $11.61 million cume * RockNRolla (Warner Bros.) — $1.55 million, $1,877 PTA, $2.17 million cume
High School Musical: Senior Year (Disney) has confounded the so-called "experts" again. HSM3 looks to be up as exponentially on Saturday from its soft Friday, and the Kenny Ortega-directed musical may reach $15 million for the weekend. All of my numbers for the weekend that I published on Friday (and everybody's weekend projections) were too low. Halloween lands on a Friday only once every seven years, so there is not a lot of data to draw from, but trick-or-treating completely wiped out High School Musical 3 and damaged the performance of every movie on Friday. In terms of projecting the weekend, you almost need to throw the day out and treat Saturday and Sunday separately. So, HSM3 grabs $1.7 million on Friday (down 90 percent from last Friday's $16.5 million), then Saturday and Sunday come in more in line with expectations. Let's say $8 million Saturday (down 47 percent from last Saturday's $15.3 million) and $5.2 million today (down 47 percent from last Sunday's $9.7 million) for a $15M million take. That's a whole lot better than the $9.5 million that I originally projected on Friday. Also rebounding dramatically was Zack and Miri Make a Porno (Weinstein). I predicted a $6.9 million three-day and a fourth-place finish after its soft Friday, but the Kevin Smith comedy will wrap up the weekend at No. 2, with about $10.7 million. Still, the movie will most likely not get to $30 million domestic, and competing studios tell me that Weinstein believed that this Kevin Smith-directed comedy had the chops to finish in the $80 million range. The rest of the Top 5 will be Saw V (Lionsgate), with a possible $10.11 million, Clint Eastwood's Changeling (Universal) with a likely $9.4 million and Freestyle's The Haunting of Molly Hartley with about $6 million. Here's what I wrote Friday night about Changeling: "I am a huge Eastwood fan, but Changeling is a big disappointment. Jolie's performance is overwrought, and I can 'see all the strings.' The usually good Jeffrey Donovan has an odd 1930s speech pattern, while Amy Ryan (an Oscar nominee for Gone Baby Gone) plays it with a present-day feel and John Malkovich is at his affected best (too much at times). It is a hard-to-watch two-and-a-half hours, and I find it dubious to suggest that this one will have much of an awards season run. The average Eastwood fan will walk out of Changeling saying, 'Bring on Gran Torino.' " Needless to say, I am not a big fan of the movie. One other advance signal you may have missed: Quantum of Solace (Sony) opened Friday in the United Kingdom and it shattered the all-time opening day box office record in the territory. As I wrote over the weekend: "I think it is safe to predict a $50 million opening weekend for the Sony release with first week sales (Friday-thru-Thursday) an estimated $66 million. The second weekend for the new Bond will likely be in the $29 million-$33 million range, which would mean a drop of only 35 percent-40 percent, and Quantum may be at $135 million domestic by the Monday after Thanksgiving."

Friday, October 31, 2008 Actuals | Daily | Total | 1 | Saw V | $3,160,000 | $38,887,000 | 2 | Changeling | $2,305,000 | $2,985,000 | 3 | Zack and Miri Make a Porno | $2,170,000 | $2,170,000 | 4 | The Haunting of Molly Hartley | $1,700,000 | $1,700,000 | 5 | High School Musical 3: Senior Year | $1,690,000 | $48,408,000 | 6 | The Secret Life of Bees | $840,000 | $22,127,000 | 7 | Pride and Glory | $755,000 | $9,111,000 | 8 | Max Payne | $745,000 | $32,595,000 | 9 | Eagle Eye | $685,000 | $89,819,000 | 10 | Beverly Hills Chihuahua | $660,000 | $79,974,000 | Latest 'Saw' Finishes First on FridayEven though it debuted behind High School Musical 3: Senior Year last weekend, Saw V has a legitimate shot at finishing in first place this weekend. According to Friday's estimates, the horror flick brought in another $3.2 million and by doing so it boosted its total haul to $38.8 million. This Halloween weekend is shaping up to be a mediocre one, and a lot of films may post disappointing performances at the box office. On its first day of expansion, Changeling was able to finish second with $2.3 million, which means it's on pace for around $7 million this weekend. Zack and Miri Make a Porno debuted on Friday in an underwhelming third place with only $2.17 million, which means that the film will fall way below where many in the industry projected it would. Also, HSM3 must have lost most of its audience to Halloween festivities because it finished in fifth place on Friday with only $1.7 million. It's hardly surprising that Saw V did well on Halloween night, and since no fantasy moguls picked it, this just makes it a "what if" scenario for those who considered it, and a release that effects points and category contributions for all that were selected. Hopefully (for me and NWG) The Haunting of Molly Hartley will do similarly well through the weekend as it did on its opening night... though I expect another scary IMDb score regardless Clearly I have reason to continue to be happy with Changeling, but do go see it please. Zack and Miri was selected by a number of fantasy moguls, the hope must be that those going to the theater the rest of the weekend will have had their fill of scary movies and want some adult comedy with their popcorn.
