I was absolutely obsessed in my teen years with The Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant, and before that, as a young child, I kept checking out the same book from the library about Dolley Madison.

There was a World Book at school, but not at home.  I had EB, a scientific encyclopedia I can't remember who published, a 1 volume medical "encyclopedia" and a few other reference books at the core of my library.

One of my favorites from junior high school was a chemistry book that taught, among other things, how to make nitroglycerine.  The librarian was always hiding it (as if a 11-year-old has the money to buy the raw materials and lab equipment {#Rolleyes}).

I wouldn't know where to start with novels...
