And why, oh why, can I never get waited on by the smiling, charming librarian just one station over from the one I drew in the lottery of lines? WTF, Maryte? Do they make you take classes on how to make people feel dirty and annoying for daring to want the knowledge? Or do they just randomly pick days and everyone has to take their turn at being the Satan Librarian? What's the deal? I think it might be generational. Or the utter distress induced by unprecedented budget cuts in library services (library administration in many locales feel the services provided by trained librarians can be provided by part-time volunteers). Of course, there *are* librarians who do not love what they do - librarians who got into the profession because they thought it would be easy and that they'd be left alone in a quiet cavern, or female librarians who thought this would be a great career to meet a potential spouse. I can't speak for the culture of your particular library (mayhaps proximity to the beach that they're not enjoying makes them pissy), but my fellow students are unbelievably passionate about helping people in their information endeavours (including me, and I don't even like people).

maryte wrote: Fabulous article. My favourite passage (although this is more about public librarians, which is not the only flavour of Information God/dess):
As for librarians, they're civil servants. They deal with all kinds of social welfare problems, from childcare to homelessness to people who can't navigate the bureaucracy to get benefits or help finding a job. The buck stops at the library. If we keep cutting library aid, people who can't figure out how to file for taxes, or how to use e-mail, are going to be out of luck. About 20 percent of the population is not wired; they don't have Internet access or a smart phone. They can't go to Starbucks and get Wi-Fi with their $4 latte.
That´s right and it´s always a good to point to remember how libraries get packed with international students during those last days of tax filing. I did it once and they (the librarians) had several sessions on a day. Rooms were always crowded. But then I started using taxslayer and avoided the crowd.
