Well now take a look at that
I made a castle in the sand
Saying this is where it's at you
Couldn't understand now
If I realised that the chances were slim
How come I'm so surprised when the tide rolled in

Gonna live on solid rock
Gonna live on solid rock
Wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid rock

Well I'm sick of potential
I'm sick of vanity now
I'm sticking to essential reality now
I don't know what's worse
Try to make a silk purse
Living an illusion in confusion

Gonna live on solid rock
Gonna live on solid rock
Gonna live I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid rock

You know a house of cards
Never built for shock
You could blow it down in any kind of weather
Now you take two solid rocks two solid blocks
You know they're gonna stick
Yeah they're gonna stick together oh-oh

Yeah because the heart that you break
That's the one that you rely on
The bed that you make
That's the one you gotta lie on
When you point your finger cos your plan fell through
You got three more fingers pointing back at you yeah

Gonna live on solid rock
I'm gonna live on solid rock
I wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid

Rock rock solid rock
Rock rock solid rock
I wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid

Rock rock solid rock
Rock rock solid rock
I wanna give I don't wanna be blocked
I'm gonna live on solid solid solid solid rock

Solid rock
Solid rock

I'm amazed too. How did they put your face back on?
Right up there w my Straits favs!!
Always loved this country blues rocker.  How many original sounds this guy got out of the guitar!

It has a Rolling Stones’ sound for me also.
Must have paid a fortune for the album cover art...

Took you a whole minute to realize you weren't?

The "juke box" at the Rose and Crown, Oundle, Northants, 1982... Always a favourite of Mr. James Watson, who, at the time, was a dead-ringer (appearance) for one David Gilmour. Cheers, mate!
It was the B Side of Romeo and Juliet - which was the first single I brought

Classic, thanks for picking up the day for me, RP!

This is the only DS/Knopfler number I've actively disliked and have had to mute. Yer man's just shouting in the mike, the backing sucks, the tune sounds like something a drunk would compose after 10 pints and 3 whiskeys (or a six-pack of Special Brew), and it's got all the subtlety and feeling of a smack in the teeth with a half-brick. A real turkey in Knopfler's otherwise brilliant oeuvre, at least to these ears.

I agree.  Big fan of the artist, but not of this song.

The live version from Alchemy is great, should be played.
+1 that.  I agree with many of the comments here that this is only a pretty good DS tune.

The Alchemy recording has something extra on it.

BTW, Fred--a fairly astute critic--has a point. Nonetheless, I love this throwaway.

Happily, yes.  That's one reason I listen.

Huh, this is my least favorite song on the album. But I know what you mean about the "Sultans" apathy - it was "Romeo and Juliet" that made me sit up and take notice.
Making Movies is easily one of best rock albums of all time. Weep Dave Matthews...

As a big Dire Straits / Mark Knopfler fan i must admit this certainly is one of the lesser songs...

BUT......... They played it alot live and during a concert this song actually makes the place boogy!

To me, this one is a 6.

That's true. This is also one of the better tunes on the live album, Alchemy, IMHO.

I agree with a lot of the previous posters.

Dire Straits has made some great songs.

This is not one of them. {#Sad}

Album filler
Love the song, but it sure sounds like low bit-rate mp3 mush to me. Noticeably inferior to the surrounding songs and much worse than my CD.

Just sayin' that maybe a new upload would be a good thing.

I love DS and MK, but must disagree with that broad statement.

wow, this is really not one of their better songs.

I like Dire Straits ... a lot. I don't even care about the narrow range in terms of style from one song to the next. It's a great vein and Mark Knopfler has mined it well. But I also have to say that, in comparison to some other artists I also like a lot, they do seem to be rather overrepresented on RP, both in terms of frequency of play and the number of different tracks available.
Well I'm sich of Potential I'm sick of Vanity I'm sticking to essential Reality I love that lyric

beyond divine. whoever says dire straits songs all sound the same obviously only knows "brothers in arms", which, while a great album, is not what makes mark and co great. it's "making movies" "love over gold" etc. love it all.
I've heard (and even owned) several Dire Straits albums. Fact is, the guitar sound is very similar from song to song. Knopfler is much like Pat Metheny in that respect - hugely talented, but unable to change his style to fit the song. His voice also sounds the same on most of his songs, but I suppose that's easier to forgive.

That girl on roller skates got me into this band so long ago. Loveit!
