This blue world and her countless sisters
And all that came before that day
Our atoms straining to align
Was the universe in rehearsal for us

When all the world is sucking on its sleeve
You'll hear an urgent morse in the gentle rain
And if you plot your course on the window pane
You'll see the coldest star in the arms of the oldest tree
And you'll know to come to me

In the back of a broken car
When the blizzard blossom flew
Reading aloud with our fingers
What we both already knew
And the blizzard blossom flew

A sober midnight wish
Flies over the roofs and down through the years
Would that you and yours are sleeping
Safe and warm in size formation
While three chambers of my heart beat true and strong with love for another
The fourth is yours forever

I like celery and Elbow so you must be right - it's genetic.

Really though - this song is probably the hardest one to get one's brain around. Kind of surprised Bill chose this one. This whole album is pretty low key - but they admitted to trying something different. All in all I think it's really good.

But give some of their earlier stuff a listen and give it a chance. They write great lyrics and make some really good music. Try 'The Fix' for instance.

Sorry to bring this to the party... Really liking Elbow (Thanks RP!) but hate celery.

Maybe it's a recessive gene? Not my area of knowledge.

Some of the posts wander into an emotional abyss over these guys. Chill out and move on

I've always thought hate was a bit of an overwrought reaction to music or any form of art.  Dislike something perhaps, but hate?  I try not to give it a place in my life and perhaps the term is used too loosely these days.
The more I hear from this band, the bigger fan I become. Thanks again RP!

Funny!
Maybe the best song on this album. And the video is great too!
The world could be a disaster and then Guy Garvey's voice comes on and .....

ahhhh.

Great lyrics and vocals from Guy Garvey. Saw them at the Paradise and they are just as good live...not a snooze fest as some seem to think. Very uplifting.
Thanks to RP I now have this album and Little Fictions in my collection. Great stuff!

It's there, Ollie. it is called the play next button. I use it all the time on anything from the Pretenders or Sinéad O'Conner (see that, I even spelled her name correct).

Happy play - nexting

Blimey.  Serious stuff.

I'm a MASSIVE fan of Elbow, ever since RP introduced me to them, but posts like this just make me grin. For a second I almost wished I felt the same as you do, if only so I could feel the same satisfaction you must have felt typing that rant. Keep on keepin' on.

I certainly appreciate people who appreciate Elbow...alas, I am not among them. I would like to have that instantly-programmed PSD button built right in when the dreery droning begins and seems to endure a very long time! I keep hoping that I'll learn to like Elbow...repeated doses has not helped.

Aye, Ramsbottom ...    Tup's Arse t't  locals. T'other 'ighpoints bein' t' Pennines.
I agree—about the celery.  But I do like this song too.

I can moon. I can listen to all sorts of stuff.
But not this.
I don't like celery either. Might be the same gene.

2nd time today; once in the playlist, now on PSD, and okay with that.

The negative comments make me want to raise my rating.  There, 10.  All is well.  {#Razz}
This is awful, please make it finish
I'm hearing Gary Brooker and Procol Harum in parts of this. Very interesting. Jury is still out, but I'm coming around. Love the diversity of aural delights here at RP!
I first hear Peter Gabriel, then realize it's Elbow. This song has legs. Great lyrics and the positive comments are great.
Evokes an atmosphere so sublime to me.
Lots of Elbow hating commenters out there but I, for one, really enjoy their music. Thanks for playing it, RP.
I agree. This music is spiritually refreshing.

And then one unexpected morning, you might be walking down the road and the realization hits you, you've passed through the trough, things are looking up and a huge weight lifts of your shoulders.. you're not exactly going to break out in a jig but you get a heavenly sense of release.. maybe it is just the realization that somewhere, somebody loves you and it's actually all good, as it is..

The rating descriptions 2-10 are sufficiently descriptive.  I always felt, "Sucko-barfo" was juvenile.  Until this song.

Agreed. It is an insta-PSD for me like a few other similar bands...
As a long time Elbow fan (discovered thanks to RP - they get no radio airplay here in Portland) this is their best record since Seldom Seen Kid. I've had this CD in my car for months and have grown to appreciate those songs that didn't grab me at first. Their music is subtle and requires a few plays before they can be fully appreciated. Their songs unfold the more you listen to them. Guy writes heartfelt lyrics and his sensitivity comes through. They are true musicians. I love that Bill plays them as much as he does and by doing that he has caused me to appreciate this wonderful band. I've met them a couple of times on US tours and they are the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. I simply love Elbow to death.

Lush, over-produced soft rock.

Even when Elbow has a tidy 3-minute ditty with evocative lyrics they can't seem to get out of their own way and procede to muck it up by dragging it on for another, unbearable 2 minutes. Did I say over-produced? That's not quite right; a producer might have had the good sense to cut out the infection before it destroyed the entire limb.

Everbody keeps comparing these guys to early Genesis like that's a good thing. I seem to recall that speckled between all of Genisis' experimental, mental masturbatory filler were a handful of really good - some great - songs. Elbow has entire albums worth of mediocrity with occasional flairs of the inane and self-congratulatory. they're not a rock band, they're like if Electric Light Orchestra had only ever listened to Paul Anka and not the Beatles. Did I say Paul Anka, I meant Andy Williams.
Funny how, every single time this song comes up, I expect I'm going to hear Björk's "Hyperballad". It has exactly the same high-pitched, organ-like chord at the start...
Not in the mood, at the moment, for this pokey song. Seems beautiful, but just not what I want/need to hear right now.
Elbow is brilliant....love this band.

I'm going the opposite way, Elbow rapidly heading into Talking Heads / Pink Floyd territory of being played too much.

cannot stop listening to this album..... Great pieces to paint too {#Whisper}
This is a real "just press play and come back when it's over" kind of album.  Looking forward to bringing it on some road trips the next few weekends.

Well put.  He sings like he really enjoys singing.

This band does plodding, slower songs extremely well.

Thanks aspicer for the post.  This one is now on the to-procure list.

Cover reminds me of REM Chronic Town cover...

Been actively listening to this album the past 3 days.  It's excellent!  Perhaps their best IMHO.  I wouldn't have chosen THIS tune for RP, there are others that are better, and I do like this.  This album really has a wonderful flow to it when you sit down and listen to the whole thing - highly recommended!  {#Music}
I like this!
beautiful! <3
God this is boring.  Normally a fan, but this is turgid dross only made worse by the fact that our boy Guy appears to be standing at the end of a long sewer to sing it....  which I guess is appropriate in a way.
New Elbow, eh?

Mellow.  A little lazy.

What is the rest of the CD like?
Oddly, I am enjoying this a lot more than much of their other stuff.  Beautiful, I think.
Fully agree with the man from Brighton whose name I missed.  I like Elbow but this is self indulgent and so so boring.  Does it really last as long as Stairway to Heaven, or has it just defied Einstein and slowed time?
OK, I am in a minority but that's never been a problem for me.

I think this is twaddle. A self indulgent piece of minimalist flotsam going nowhere.

That is all.
Never heard anything I didn't like from Elbow. Guy Garvey's voice is so distinct and wonderful. Immediately recognized, continues to resound.
It sounds a bit like Catherine Wheel
The sensation I am getting is like drinking someone else's backwash...
an inviting first song of a very good album... love elbow {#Music}
"While three chambers of my heart beat true and strong with love for another, the fourth, the fourth is yours forever."
The songs of Elbow tell a story. I hear them with my heart.
The Take Off And Landing Of Everything is more of the story.

I like it, love his voice. It always take a few listens to catch the words. I'll refrain comments on the coherence until I know what he's saying.
Thanks for playing it Bill, I didn't know about it until I heard it here.

I love Elbow. I do not think this is the best track on the album, but it is growing on me. The album as a whole is brilliant - listen to the title track - amazing!

Just purchased this CD.  It's not quite as good as "Seldom Seen Kid", but it's decent.  I'm still waiting out the grow-on-me period.
Love Elbow! Very excited about this new album! Cheers!
