I don't know what you must be on
You walked in like the Aga Khan
Did you fly in on a jet?
Win a million dollar bet?
So let me get my good shoes on
I wanna follow in the same old steps
Where you waltz around like you're the best
Where your garden blooms in May
But it's snowing every day
'Cause you have everything you want

You must be (you must be)
The Houdini in my life
But you can't see (you can't see)
I could never be your wife

'Cause I'm still a lady
No, I'm not some wench
That falls for your lines
I'm not on the fence
Your routine is fading
Boy, I could use a wrench
I know my words won't fail me
Please excuse my French
(Pardonne-moi)

Today you think you're Errol Flynn
Sharing stories where you think you've been
Your style must be cramped
Without a passport stamp
Can't you see the twister that you're in?
Why drown inside a sea of words?
You're going under, now you won't get heard
So just give it a rest
This time your more is less
You're going solo in this dream

You must be (you must be)
The Houdini in my life
But you can't see (you can't see)
I could never be your wife

'Cause I'm still a lady
No, I'm not some wench
That falls for your lines
I'm not on the fence
Your routine is fading
Boy, I could use a wrench
I know my words won't fail me
Please excuse my French
(Pardonne-moi)

EXCELLENT!!  RP introduced me to Caro. Now I like a LOT of her songs!!  Thanx RP!
ATTN BILL: The lyrics in the RP database for this song are very, very incorrect. For instance, let's pick on the chorus. RP has:

'Cause I'm still a lady
No, I'm not some witch
That postponed your lines
I'm not on the best
You're Houdini in the state and boy
I can't use a wretch
I know my words won't tell me
Please excuse my French

this should be:

'Cause I'm still a lady
No, I'm not some wench
That falls for your lines
I'm not on the fence
Your routine is fading, boy
I could use a wrench
I know my words won't fail me
Please excuse my French

so perhaps some of the discussion about whether the lyrics are contrived is moot. Correct lyrics (or at least, more correct lyrics) can be found here: https://genius.com/Caro-emerald-excuse-my-french-lyrics

EDIT: Looks like it's fixed now! Thanks!
It's a song wtf is everyone talking about Oxford dictionarys for? You either dig it or you don't ...relax
That Chorus, though. ^_^

Her enunciation and phrasing may sound odd because English is not her native language - maybe that's not the reason though.
Total to climb
Eventually she did.
bringing  a baby  down.
2.... And going down.

just annoying
What is the audience for this? I suppose the same folks who dug Leon Redbone.

Shhh, nerd, sit down, you couldn't even guess what I'm referring to.

Not to music but to the lyrics. They are straining to come across smart, but only turn out forced and insincere.
Just like you when you're submitting an incomplete quotation.

The rest goes:
Created or arranged in a way that seems artificial and unrealistic:
("the ending of the novel is too pat and contrived")

Oxford doesn't seem to think that all the endings of novels are contrived "by definition".

Now go back to school.
Contrived lyrics, and she doesn't even swear.
Cool hat too.
Enunciation is forced and phrasing is off. Just imagine how Billie would have sung it.

Who can really be against attractive women singing provocatively.

Caught the tail end of this song as I logged in.  Heard enough to order the CD.  If you like Pink Martini...
Contrived.
this is pretty lame lyrically and vocally

Liking this a lot lately.

You said it friend.  I love Ms. Emerald — I think "sassy" is the word.
Not that bad... reminds me of a funny scene in "Leaving Las Vegas", the movie.

I was surprised to find out she is not American. She sounds like she came from New Jersey in the middle of the last century. Seems like a lot of European chanteuses are modeling themselves on vintage American models. Not a knock as she sure can sing. Just surprising.
LOVE. THIS. MORE. PLEASE.
I've heard a better song.
Her French is better than my Bad English!

(...she's a real Pearl btw;)

Yep... it's PSD time!
Inoffensive but hardly essential.
Agreed.  My low end will go to 32 Hz.  The floor shakes.  It's incredible.

Too bad they didn't use the Contra-bass Sarusphone ... that would bust those woofers up.

Simply do not "get" Caro Emerald. Obviously I missed something in my musical education that doesn't allow me even slightly to enjoy her music.
I don't like this entire "I want to sound like I'm from the 20s" genre, and Caro is probably the worst offender.

It's not rocket science... the disc is an import.

CD here is only 13.50 EUR. No import needed :)

Anyway, do we still need to import in the digital world?

Sorry, but no, no no not yet....

Oh what a nice discovery.
That's why I love Radioparadise! Having a lot of fun with Caro Emerald, listening to her other songs (right now "Stuck") -

Ooh, this is a great retro hoot! Elle m'as fait sourir :o) - 9 du jury de Nottingham

They played a different song by Caro Emerald yesterday. My tolerance for her is so low, twice in two days exceeds my capacity. P.S. Like the "All Lost in a Supermarket" tag!

Sorry RP, for the most part I love your music choices. Caro Emerald for me is the most over-played artist RP plays. I simply don't understand the infatuation with her music, which seems cartoonish, not musical. Just one person's taste.

Le Merde. Excuse my French.
I would like to listen to her in a cafe while drinking wine and smoking unfiltered cigarettes.

I don't know if she's got an American accent - she's from Holland.  Not a bad tune, nice voice.
Pretty bland. Novelty song?
I like Caro Emerald
Ha, fun song!
shit, i'm american, and her american accent even bothers me.
Fine French for all ages, 10 mos. old grandchild grooving on it, thanks.
Wench, wrench, French.
Fun song.
For the first or second play.
Then please blast The Who.
Oooh, la laaaaa!
