On a winter's Sunday I go
To clear away the snow
And green the ground below

April all an ocean away
Is this the better way to spend the day?
Keeping the winter at bay

What were the words I meant to say before you left?
When I could see your breath lead
Where you were going to
Maybe I should just let it be
And maybe it will all come back to me
Sing: O January O

How I lived a childhood in snow
And all my teens in tow
Stuffed in strata of clothes

Pale the winter days after dark
Wandering the gray memorial park
A fleeting beating of hearts

What were the words I meant to say before she left?
When I could see her breath lead
Where she was going to
Maybe I should just let it be
And maybe it will all come back to me
Sing: O January O

Thom Yorke could sing anything and it would sound beautiful. ;)

They should rename themselves 'The Nasalists' as the guy sounds like he's singing with a hose shoved up his nose..

Then they'd be called the Hosiers.

NOTHING is overplayed on RP.
I'm liking this track more and more...

And all the comments about his voice, i can understand you don't like it... It's a hate-or-love voice...

I cannot. I am glad someone else is speaking up, they are taking over the joint. Like I have said before, I don't want to hear groups I like so many times a day on a radio station.{#Stop}

Yes, they are overplayed.
Help, I'm falling asleep....  please play something more upbeat, Bill {#Eek}

Maybe I do not have any taste at all, but I love the music of "these people".

i'm not saying they're not talented in some ways...but definitely overplayed on RP.

they should get another singer and just have the other guy play a banjo or something.. maybe he could pick it up quickly..

This is the third Decemberists song in less than 24 hours. Isn't one enough :).

I actually don't get them. They whiny voice of the lead singer.  The trite lyrics.  When they come on I can't get to my computer fast enough to turn them off.

Maybe someone can enlighten me.

It seems to be a featured album and thus we have it higher in rotation for a while . . . until enough people moan about it and Bill notices and takes it off.
Great band and album
gfy if you don't like
I simply cannot stand that voice.
this is simply beautiful. nothing more to say.
as for the whole album, i am not SO convinced... as someone said before: a little bit more experiments could have added some "special" quality to the album. a little more "rock" to the folk, a little bit more roughness. i´d like them to expand their limits, in whatever direction, because i am qiute sure they will be good  in doing this.

I was really, really disappointed by this album- unlike the previous albums it could have been done by any number of groups. That said, this song is the exception to that rule- the writing, sparse accompaniment and the way his limitations becomes strengths in this tune all scream what I love about the Decemberists. Hopefully their next album will be more experimental (and their concerts will once again become affordable).

Channeling the spirit of John Denver.

For someone who enjoys Radiohead and Glen Hansard, your remarks seem odd?  Both Thom and Glen have whinny and nasally overtones when they sing, yet you criticize Colins voice?  Always wonder why people choose one over another... just wondering.

Thom Yorke could sing anything and it would sound beautiful. ;) However, I am very critical of later Radiohead stuff as well as Thom's solo stuff as I don't think it's generally got much merit. Thom's voice aside, their (his and Radiohead's) songwriting has definitely lost whatever it had back in the 90's (most people don't realize that most of the Bends was written & they were touring & playing those songs before even Pablo Honey was released, or the fact that Nigel Godrich is a big part of the reason the Bends and OK Computer were as good as they were). Unfortunately fame and fortune was something the old Radiohead could not handle, and that special time of their songwriting is over. Dead and gone. OK Computer was the blowoff top!

It may be, with the Decemberists, that I feel above all, they are overrated and get way too much attention from RP. Hence the very strong remarks! FWIW, I used to bitch about all the overplay Snow Patrol was getting also.. and I actually like Snow Patrol..

Heard this (and another track off this album) on XM the other day.  I'm definately adding this one to my buy list as I've really enjoyed the last couple albums.  Crane Wife was in my option was a little weaker...  but from what I've heard from this album I'm excited for it.
