putting on my power, righteous as a rose
dynamite the mountain, now i'm walking up the road
the love we made at gunpoint wasn't love at all
the dancing in the valley, the moons is the mirrored ball
blew open my mind, now it's an empty room
swinging in the hammock, dogs are walking across the roof
i watch you braid your hair, you're from another time
when the earth wasn't so angry
and god was on our side

searching west and east
and all points in-between
underneath the lines of thought
you're there and then you're not

the mayans stole tomorrow, hid it underground
we come with heavy magnets but it still hasn't been found
i'm sweating out my secrets in the temazcal
they're screaming in the calle that there are stars about to fall

looking through the trees
cities and the seas
things we've seen
ovnis on the lawn
they're there and then they're gone
there and then they're gone

searching west and east
all points in between
and underneath the hand of god
you're there and then you're not

This live version is twice as good:

Yuck.
This is the most nervous or constipated sounding monster I've ever heard.
Cannot miss that Conor Oberst vocalization.
I keep hoping that Bill lets this song fall off the playlist....it drags and drags and then gets stuck in my head and drags some more

Mr Stingray, We would expect nothing less from your grandmother!

This is a good thing, btw.

One of my favorite lines ever
Boney-M inside? in memory of Bobby Farrel with voice of Frank Farian? :)

Kinda reads like a pseudo-intellectual circle jerk song to me.

"Poor Mastering" Jesus dude, talk about nit picking, check out the backstory, these four guys went to remote location and recorded played and engineered this whole album by themselves, this is a master work. Jim James, M. Ward, Conner Oberst and Mike Mogis are all brilliant and successful artists in their own right. No one played drums but they learned for this album, no one was an engineer but the did it anyway. This is pure and exquisite music making at it's finest. Monster of Folk are one of very few American Super groups, I can think of The Wilbury's as their only contemporary comparison.

Sorry man, they would have benefited from having a real producer and a real sound engineer on this one, middle-of-nowhere or not. And not having Conor Oberst. Or at least, not letting him sing.

Too Cool

Funny-- I've heard this before on RP and never bothered to look at the artist name because I assumed it was Gomez.
Great stuff. Give us another album, fellas!

Sure there is, his name is Dylan and Seeger once took an axe to him.  The "Frankenstein" symbolism is too rich...you know lightning (electric guitars) peasant mob (Seeger with an axe)....
All together now... hey juuuunne...
Saw M Ward on Austin City Limits or some other show
Very good...
Nice tune, however, the overall riff and musicality is a pretty blatant rip off of Love & Rockets acoustic version of "It's All In My Mind" (by far the better version of that tune by the the way!).
Much like there is no crying in baseball.... there are no monsters in folk.
this song sounds like the way I feel on a really rough morning, waiting for the water to boil, wallowing around the kitchen...

Is this a real band or just a tee shirt?

Would you like to ask Bill to select the lousy songs for airplay?

By the way, Temazcal sounds like a type of tequila.  Maybe that 'splains it: drunks playing Folk Music.

{#Stupid}  No.

It was a freaking compliment.

Well, what did you think?

Their ACL appearance was so good that it makes the album come off as kinda boring.

I LOVE "Austin City Limits," but it's usually on PBS long after I'm conked out for the night.  Nope, no VCR, no Tivo. We live a very simple life here in the land of the freak and the home of the depraved.  I'll try to check out more of their stuff, based on your rec.  I know they played in Portland, Oregon not too long ago, and were very warmly-received... Wish I could have been there.

That is my experience with many artists too, RP picks the good cuts.

This song is quite sonic, wonderful depth in the recording...

We must suffer from the same condition, I concur.

I think the Japanese term is Mimi Unagi, and there is a band by that name, sort of a punk rock Japanese street performer kind of thing.  Musical style quite a bit different than Monsters of Folk...

I don't know much Japanese, but I do know "Unagi" means "eel", at least in a sushi context .  So maybe it's an ear eel. Like an ear worm except slimier, possibly electrified.

Oh, the song?  Don't much care for it, or for a group that calls themselves Monsters of Folk.

Wow, is that really Oberst singing?  I much prefer this subdued technique to his usual knives-in-my-ears tremelololo.

I thought this vocalist might be inspired by Oberst, but there wasn't enough vocal tremor to actually be him. I'm glad to be proven wrong, as I prefer this calmer version too.

Yep. I like lots of types of music and variations within these types, but this just sits there and moulders. If this were a drug it could be called a somnifacient.

I like most of Conor's projects. The only one that hasn't resonated is Bright Eyes. This is nice.

the album is super cool, but what is even better is the live show - you get the best of everyone! saw them last year - it was amazing.

I second that, sublime is the only adjective for that song.

There's not a bad song on the whole CD...and Conor has several among the best (this one included). Saw them live in Philly last fall and they were great.

I'm listening to this album on MOG.com (a subscription service sort of like lala.com used to be) and am really enjoying it.  {#Smile}
I reached for my wikipedia and drew fast. Yup, that's the Bright Eyes singer on vocals.
Okay..Okay.. it's good. Don't bug me about it. 8.
