You inadvertently hit the issue right on the head:  The Superbowl, like American Idol, is overtly, cynically commercialized pap designed to sell advertising time and little else.

Radio Paradise generally despises such things, as do it's loyal supporters.

Yes, RPeeps hate the Super Bowl... {#Rolleyes}

The phenomenon you're describing is really just elitism pretending to be 'taste'... But true good tatse doesn't rule something out just because it's popular, a point that is lost on a LOT of the people around here.

Stuff from the mass marketed music machine is much like alcohol in that it's OK in moderation, and much like junk food in that it's OK as long as you don't let it completely replacing more nourishing fare.
5 for Chutzpah!
This on the same day that Bill segued straight from Beethoven to AC DC.

Sure as shit has people's attention!

I don't know if I agree with that.  Lambert is actually a good performer, and definitely stands out from most of the Idol crowd.  He just went way overboard here and turned Johnny's classic into an abomination against all that is right and good in this world.

Tough crowd as usual, poor Bill, he usually gets mauled when he tries something a little different and this is no exception. I hope he got a good chuckle out of the posts, I like his comment about the tuna :-) Idol is basically a singing competition and a popularity contest. Lambert is actually more talented than many of the so called special guest "artists" that Idol paraded out from time to time. Did anyone see Kayne West?, that was a horror show. Lambert showed some creativity in the arrangements for his songs and he's got some pipes. But it doesn't look like he'll get far on RP {#Lol}
Seriously??? There should be absolutely no support for this show or any of it's contestants. If they're so damn good why can't they make it on their own like a decent artist?

I completely agree with the comment below. My ears are still bleeding and the wind from Johnny has stripped the flesh from my bones.

Worst imaginable version of this song...Johnny Cash is spinning in his grave.{#Puke}

There are those who truly unique, and then there are those who are making a conscious, market-savvy, inauthentic attempt at appearing unique. Adam proved he was the latter, song after song this season—with this one being the most egregious example.This dude should be in the dicitonary under 'poseur'.

ditto! ;)
50+ comments & 80+ ratings right off the first time the song was played on RP. This certainly goes to show that Adam cannot go unnoticed. That alone counts for something.

Painful!
81 ratings and 53 comments from a single play on June 26, 2009.  Amazing!

The horror. Adam Lambert will have to pay penance for this one.

Interesting, in a good way.

interesting, the other way...what's this asian sound weakening everything?
Well.........he certainly makes the song his own.
I saw the show where he performed this and didn't care for it, but I think I like this version better. After that introduction, I was expecting Kris' cover of Falling Slowly instead.

And interesting that Bill followed this up with Mad World since Adam did that song on the show as well.

Pretty interesting collection of comments — but I think that's my fave.

And I looked down under my feet — I think it's a bluefin tuna :-).
The horror of this song was almost redeemed by the comments. Strike that. Partially redeemed.

C'mon... whatever his sexual orientation, this guy is a true artist. A breath of fresh air.

I don't think anyone who rated it a 1 was thinking about his sexual orientation. At least I wasn't.

I like hearing people doing something different with a song — I liked Ray Steven's take on "Misty".

I'd like to hear this version done by k.d. lang, or a duet by Lambert and lang; while listening to this it struck me their voices would go well together.
Radiohead does the Grand Ole Opry.
Stop it!  Just stop it!     {#Stop}
This is horrible...
why be normal
wow, I think it's pretty cool, actually...!  I wasn't a fan of the show, so I was surprised to see that this was Adam Lambert.  It's worth a few more listens, I think!

Interesting, in a good way.
rather hear this than that crappy Ben Harper song for the 3rd day in a row

This is actually a very interesting cover...  this is good for the ears...

OK, that's it.  I now know for certain that you will say this about literally any piece of music anywhere.

Bill, you're such a sucker for a cover tune

I actually kind of like this. It's an interesting arrangement. He goes a little bit too Jeff Buckleyish at the end there though
Can't get away from this dude, can we?

The word INUNDATED comes to mind, as with reference to Brittney, Jessica, Paris, Lindsay, et al.
C'mon... whatever his sexual orientation, this guy is a true artist. A breath of fresh air.

Is this a joke? Bill, this is a joke, right?

I believe the joke is that somebody actually rated this a 10!!!  {#Think}
I will confess, I've watched Idol. (My better half is quite fond of it.) HOWEVER, This one of the worst renditions this whole past season in my opinion. Adam's rendition of "Mad World"? Noteworthy. Kris Allen's version of "Heartless"? Brilliant.

But this? *shudder*

Johnny Cash is rolling over in his grave and Roseanne is crying.

Johnny Castrato?  I don't think so.  Nope.
Sounds like a cat getting it's tail pulled

when do i get to hit the gong?

Bill, I hate to say it, but Johnny Cash is going to climb out of his grave and smack you for playing this crap.  Seriously, delete this and never play it again.
Never thought I would like any American Idol Stuff, but this is not bad!
Johnny Cash meets Scheherezade ... interesting interpretation.
Bill... now THAT'S funny!
I dunno, I'm kinda digging this.   Very interesting take on a very overplayed song, making it fresh again.  Rock on Bill, that's why I come here.
And alert secret service agents quickly wrestled the abominable cover song to the ground.
Dropping like the markets.
There went my lunch.
Very possibly the worst thing I have ever heard on RP, but, like others said, that's what makes RP cool.  This song eliminates any allegation of musical elitism.

(checks calendar) Nope, not April 1st....

{#Ask}

I'm not sure I really wanted to hear an American Idol contestant on RP, but hey, that's why I love Bill and Rebecca.  You never know what you're going to get.

Seriously.  WTF?

This is horrible, horrible crap.  Get rid of this and we'll pretend like it never happened.
Wow. Johnny and June must be spinning.
Thanks for playing some Adam!
This is excellent . . . except for some of the screaming.

Well, okay. Bill you're making me laugh today.

Bill. You. Are. Freaking. Kidding.
Right?
I really like covers. But not this one. Definitely not this one....
Radio Paradise jumps the shark.
no dont

eeeewwwww
Is this a joke? Bill, this is a joke, right?
Aww Bill, did you HAVE to?
Ohhhh, NOOOOO!

The passion for strange covers goes too far... blech! No no no!

Oh Stannard, where art thou?

Bill, really. Once only, okay?
