Curious.  I wonder if this would be an 8 for many critics if they did not know it was U2 or if they compared this song to songs of other artists rather than songs of U2.

It would not have ever rated an 8 from me U2 or no U2.

Yes, this is like tepid, watered-down broth.  IMHO

I agree. I really try not to slag artists on RP, but I can't help it. Lyrics about punching numbers into an ATM? You can't come up with anything better than THAT?

I was ready to like the new U2 album, especially when they spent a whole week on David Letterman. But I was sorely disappointed by the musical offerings presented there.

c.

every band hits a peak then goes downhill, No exceptions. Especially if they have longevity. Seeing how long U2 have been together, it's surprising how good this stuff actually is.

Had led Zeppelin kept recording for 10 more years, they would have been turning out a lot of crap at the end.  It was already starting.
They should of quit last album.  This effort from U2 sucks. What in the hell is with that trilling electronic effect in the background on this one?  It's annoying!

Love the band...  this song seems a little too sluggish for this set, though.  Good winding-down song, but I can't wind down for another few hours!!  Let's bring the beat back!
They are phoning in the same old tired sound.  There's nothing fresh and it feels like yet another U2 album that is popular not because it has any merit, but because its from U2.

U2 was a great band... one of the very best.  past tense.

Is there a band on RP that polarizes the listeners more than U2?  I'm just glad Bill ignores the vocal haters and continues to play this band on a regular basis.

Me too. {#Good-vibes} This is one of my favorite songs on the disc.

The cover is just like this track - dull, dull, boring and dull. 3 => 2
First track from this album I finally deleted from my iTunes today.  You can almost see the people getting up for beer.

I usually enjoy U2.

But I do not enjoy this song.

How can a band that did The Joshua Tree create generic sludge like this? What a pity...
WOW! this is quite horrendous! I almost feel sorry for them......sheesh

As a U2 fan I went a bought the CD to find only 3 good songs in it. I am a bit dissapointed.

Sorry {#Puke}

Particularly this site. I love RP, but some users try to hard. If I read one more "it sounds like x + y" just to tout their knowledge I'm gonna smiley puke. ^_^

Now having said that it must be tough to keep reinventing yourself (or not, as the case may be)

Lines like this are more of a cliché than the band itself.

A solid 7 for the album cover!!  5 on the song.  If the record company issued this to make people sit up and take notice I think they failed.
...i think the U2's on autopilot...

I can't speak for anyone else of course, but I totally dig U2.  This not so much.  Maybe that'll change, but so far it seems like all the rave reviews I'm reading from the record company et al are attempts to compensate for a weak album.  Time will tell.  I hope in a year I'm re-reading this and smacking my forhead...

This song gives me goose bumps
Well, no wonder this sounds like U2.

Although I'm thinking it sounds more like a bad U2 wannabe band.

Very nice.  I've always liked U2 even though I realize I'm not one of the "cool kids" for doing so.

I'm with you —- almost 30 years of consistently good music.

A lot of the "cool kids" here on RP, or at least a lot of the ones who think they're cool, seem to like Radiohead.

(sound of snicker being surpressed)

That's it?

I don't know that that's altogether necessary. But I personally stopped buying after Pop....which may've been an album or two too late, in retrospect.

But  based on this and others from this album played on RP, I continue to be confident in my non-purchasing.

It's okay, but I'm definitely NOT a U2 fan. The album cover is perfect for this song - boring.

Atomic Bomb was anything but boring, it was superb; each song carefully written and performed; and the best song of them all is still virtually unknown: Yahweh.

Absolutely, their best since Achtung Baby. And Yahweh is probably my fave off that record.

i think this song will make much more sense when it is heard 'against' the other songs from the new album. it will probably balance out the other soundscapes.

Why does RP insist on playing this garbage?
It's like this station has turned into the 'alternate top 40" radio.
Al the same crap, all the time.
With a sparse smattering of something different and worthwhile thrown in just to grab your attention...

they should retire

Interesting to watch the rating fall as people realize... no, this is the way the whole song is going to sound.  I won't rule out liking this more on subsequent listens (in fact I welcome the possibility) but so far it gets a solid "meh" from me.  Which is disappointing.
Sounds kind of 'tired'. But okay. a 5 on initial listen.
Sounds like an 80s bar band, weary of all the drunks at 2 am.
A "black hole"? Just about describes where St Bonio can shove this effort. IMHO, naturally, and no offense intended to Bonio fans out there in RP-land :o)
Third to rate this! A 7, at the first listen. {#Wink}
Hmm, not thrilled about the vocal but the production is nice.
It sounds like Brian Eno... what a suprise
i think i like it
oooooooooooOooOoo!
well, this is a nice surpise for a friday.

Sweet...new U2...to be released 3/3/09? {#Good-vibes}

However, I'm only going to give this a 6 after my first full listening.  It started at a 7...went to 8...ended at 6.  Something's missing.

I found myself singing the words and melody from their previously release song:  "You've got to pull yourself together...some kind of..."
