Uh!

You don't have to be beautiful to turn me on
I just need your body, baby, from dusk till dawn
You don't need experience to turn me out
You just leave it all up to me, I'm gonna show you what it's all about

You don't have to be rich to be my girl
You don't have to be cool to rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your... kiss

You got to not talk dirty, baby, if you wanna impress me
You can't be too flirty, mama, I know how to undress me (Yeah)
I want to be your fantasy, maybe you could be mine
You just leave it all up to me, we could have a good time

You don't have to be rich to be my girl
You don't have to be cool to rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm more compatible with
I just want your extra time and your... kiss

Yes, oh
I think I wanna dance, uh
Gotta, gotta, oh
Little Girl Wendy's Parade
Gotta, gotta, gotta

Women, not girls, rule my world, I said they rule my world
Act your age, mama, not your shoe size, maybe we could do the twirl
You don't have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude, uh
You just leave it all up to me, my love will be your food (Yeah)

You don't have to be rich to be my girl
You don't have to be cool to rule my world
Ain't no particular sign I'm compatible with!
I just want your extra time and your kiss

I agree!  Let's party like it's 1999!

The catch-beat is a genius hook:  "I just want your extra time and your ... kiss."
I vote 9.
Literally have to stop what I'm doing and get funky anytime this song comes on!! So great. So much fun! Must dance! It my fave Prince song & the video is hilarious.

Who or what  is "princess" in this word salad?  Or are you having a rather feeble pop at Prince's sexuality/gender?

I read (Milli) Vanilli
I love this original and I'm a big fan of the Tom Jones/The Art Of Noise version as well. I probably have more fun with the latter as it is easier to sing. Tom's voice is so bombastic that you can really play with it, whereas Prince's layered vocals require greater precision & I can't quite recreate all the tones (I can hit all the notes, but I can't do them justice).

Thanks for the link... Not a big fan of Prince's music either but WOW what a talent

Yeah ... tho I'm not sure it's the 'core' of RP listeners, but it's certainly true of some subset thereof.

One of those songs I can appreciate without liking all that much.

Classic - so funky and timeless.
when you think about Picasso, and how he took a drawing, and gradually removed bits of the definition of the object, reducing it a bare minimum - but to the point where you could still tell what it was...

Listen to the minimalism here: the vocal, the simple rhythm track, the weirdly gated drums, the sparse rhythm guitar and minimal backgrounds - but it's all a percolating funk.

Women not girls rule my world.
Act your age not your shoe size.
You don't have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude.

Can you tell he's just having some fun here?

And bonus points for a mid-80's track that doesn't sound dated.

Sadly, it may have been his work ethic in part, that killed Prince.  I think history will show him to have been an excellent, underrated, very influential artist.

There was a stretch in the 80s where he was writing the equivalent of a song a day. Quite the work ethic. The only other musician I can think of that is at it everyday (and probably also has a massive vault of unreleased music) is Eddie Van Halen. Workaholics :-)

One of Prince's bones of contention with Warner was their unwillingness to release music as often as he wanted to. He should've been born 15 years sooner and release 5 albums in 3 years like Dylan in the mid 60s.

How is this a 6.3. Damn, y'all are such Pitchfork snobs. This song is pure pleasure. 8.5 easy.

ARRRRRRRGG..........  I have the volume cranked for Frank Zappa's Willie the Pimp and then this started.

Yeah, yeah, some of you commentariat may not care for Prince, but consider the flow that Bill is developing with the last few songs: World Party gets fairly serious in a positive way, whether an omage to Lennon or not, following it up with Lennon's Mind Games is brilliant, and then Prince comes in to completely lighten things up, but with a positive attitude like a know-nothing version of World Party and with almost irresistible hooks that rhyme in their own way with what drew everyone to Lennon.  Thanks, Bill.  Discuss amongst yourselves...
I have DVD of rock hall of fame performances. Tom Petty and a bunch include Harrison's son doing While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Prince comes out of the shadows at the end and plays a blazing unbeleiveable guitar solo. You can seee Petty et al just smiling  and appreciating his playing. May not like this song but can't argue about his talent

Halter tops for men never did catch on, did they?
Tom Jones' cover of this was icky — sounded like he was passing a gallstone.  Fine, Prince sounds pained here too, but it takes balls to rock a falsetto for an entire song like this (ironically).  Just fun — it's the 'Hey Ya' of the 80s — if you gave it a '1', I can't help you...
Prince again!? Bill, Bill, Bill!!!?
Eager to bestow a 1.

I agree, has a nice beat, but is so bad lyrically and musically unimaginative for someone as talented as Prince.
That's how it sounds to sing without balls! Not cool at all, Princie-baby!

Gotta love the the RP Eclectic format. This is a GREAT song... may not be ideal on a station that plays John Hiatt and thwe Waterboys, but still one of my all time favorites that never fails to make my wife dance.

Hard for me to argue with extraordinary talent, even (especially?) when it manifests itself in curious ways.

Please PLEASE play Tom Jones' version next!!! :D

Ah, takes me back to the '80s, when I was single and in my 30s.
Great times and memories—thanks RP!   {#Dancingbanana}

No matter how much I try, I do not like this song.

I like a lot of his stuff, just not this song.

I never really paid much attention to Prince, but he was the musical guest on SNL several years ago and put on a fantastic performance of guitar virtuosity the likes of which I have seldom seen.  He has had my respect ever since.  It used to be on youtube but got pulled along with all the other Prince performances.

I also saw Tom Jones perform this song, and have to agree with others that it was outstanding.

{#Frustrated}
Excellent!!  And, I agree, the Tom Jones version of this song also is outstanding.  A little TJ would be a nice kick for RP, too!

No doubt. I just heard Purple Rain album reviewed on sound opinions (podcast), and I had to go back and listen to that album. I've always loved Prince - and Darling Nicki is one of my favs.
Why must you torture your audience with this!

Unbelievably bad.  How did this ever get on RP?
now that MJ finaly is gone... why do we have to listen to princè?

Bruce Springstein, Madonna, and Prince are three of the biggest artists to come out of the 80's that leave me wondering "wtf'?"

Out of my chair for this one! Yeeha!

He went off the boil years ago but for a brief period (around 85 - 90) Prince produced some amazing music. This one has what is still probably my favourite guitar break of all time - only ten seconds, but pure genius.

Some of the best rock has been produced  / performed by Prince...one of my personal fav artists :)
Wow. Love hearing this on RP.

Oh my!  I just caught myself bobbing my head to this song!  OH NO!!!!!!

Bop bop bop....

Prince was in front of me in line for the metal detector at an airport. He was wearing gold high heeled boots, with a golden cane and was about 4 feet tall.
How could this be anything less than a 10?  Fantastic and fabulous Prince!!!  {#Whipit}
