Presidential elections are planned distractions
To divert attention from the action behind the scenes
like a game of chess when the house is a mess
Or a petty money squabble when your marriage is in trouble
Or a football game when there's rioting in the streets

It's just another movie, another song and dance
Another poor sucker who never had a chance
It's just another captain going down with his ship
Just another jerk, taking pride in his work

I was a poor magician; I could never understand
You can't make tears disappear through sleight of hand
From the bottom of my heart -- off the top of my head
Words were pulled like rabbits from a hat but nothing was said

Now my freedom's bought and paid for -- it lights up my living room
I got nothing more to prove; I've got no reason to move
And when I'm tired of the program -- when it's taken it's toll
I can press a button, change the channel by remote control

They sound like a bunch of early 20 century Marxists. All bought into the theory that we are all owned by the capitalist class. If we could just throw off our chains the world would become a grand red utopia.

I guess they missed the history lesson where we got to see what a true horror communism really was.

There are many options between no-holds-barred capitalism and communism. For me the song reflected quite well the fed-up feeling of the Reagan years. We're still paying for that disaster of a president.
Gosh, I really miss these folks!
4 with a very few chances for rise. {#Eh}

A nice clear statement of the Situationist's vision of the Society of the Spectacle. If only Guy Debord could have written so clearly and accessibly...

Oh, and nice ass :o)

here I am at my desk...thought I was hearing voices ?? {#Stupid}
This really needs to get removed from the rotation.

I really wish this song was not in the line up, can I give it a -10?
Loving it! I used to marvel at their tongue in cheek style. More Timbuck 3!
This is their song, The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

I think he is talking about a self righteous person who is justifying what they are doing
by "taking pride in their work".  Like the person who lays you off and is smiling when they
are telling you.  The lyrics in this song are great!

Or it's a cynical thought that people who actually get up and go to work are suckers because the system's gonna chew 'em up and spit 'em out.

Wow do I not agree with this song. WTF is wrong with taking pride in your work?

Is the recording intentionally overly compressed? Sounds very short and squat.

Yep and the lead is flat most of the time.  I think they were sending a message of some sort with this track, but the incomprehensible and hackneyed "radio track" in the background is hackneyed or something.

Ummm  most definitely not.  Its just so boring.
Loved "My Future's So Bright...". These folks should stick with the lighthearted stuff they're good at - this sounds like they're in waaaay over their heads.
One of the few Top 40 acts of the time that managed to approach relevance. Love it. 8
Lame.

...significant bonus points for exceptionally-crafted phrasing...

These lyrics sound like they were written by a teenager who fancies himself very intelligent because he just discovered the writings of Allen Ginsberg.

Yeah!

Is the recording intentionally overly compressed? Sounds very short and squat.

I've been trying to make the same point as this song for as long as I can remember..  Next time i'll just play this song.

to each his/her own...though the vocalist sounds like mark knoppfler which is ok, solid 4

I remember these guys when they appeared on our local Austin access TV channel.

They just stood there with a jambox on a barstool between them and it sounded very similar to the finished product.

That whole CD is great btw.......

Flash back, this sounds as good as did in the late 80's.
