They sound like a bunch of early 20 century Marxists. All bought into the theory that we are all owned by the capitalist class. If we could just throw off our chains the world would become a grand red utopia.

I think he is talking about a self righteous person who is justifying what they are doing
by "taking pride in their work". Like the person who lays you off and is smiling when they
are telling you. The lyrics in this song are great!
Or it's a cynical thought that people who actually get up and go to work are suckers because the system's gonna chew 'em up and spit 'em out.

Is the recording intentionally overly compressed? Sounds very short and squat.
Yep and the lead is flat most of the time. I think they were sending a message of some sort with this track, but the incomprehensible and hackneyed "radio track" in the background is hackneyed or something.
These lyrics sound like they were written by a teenager who fancies himself very intelligent because he just discovered the writings of Allen Ginsberg.

I've been trying to make the same point as this song for as long as I can remember.. Next time i'll just play this song.
I remember these guys when they appeared on our local Austin access TV channel.
They just stood there with a jambox on a barstool between them and it sounded very similar to the finished product.

There are many options between no-holds-barred capitalism and communism. For me the song reflected quite well the fed-up feeling of the Reagan years. We're still paying for that disaster of a president.
