Here on these cliffs of Dover
So high you can't see over
And while your head is spinning
Hold tight, it's just beginning

You come from parents wanton
A childhood rough and rotten
I come from wealth and beauty
Untouched by work or duty

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together

I found you, a tattooed tramp
A dirty daughter from the labor camps
I laid you down on the grass of a clearing
You wept but your soul was willing

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together
And my parents will never consent to this love
But I hold your hand

Meet me on my vast veranda
My sweet untouched Miranda
And while the seagulls are crying
We fall but our souls are flying

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, oh my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together

This is Colin singing "O Valencia"

Nice song, it touched me. I love the station for playing stuff like this regardless what some people think or rate.

If only the best rated stuff is being played the result would be limited to a narrow band. How many great songs I never heard before and never had the chance to discover would I miss in that case.

Therefore thumbs up for RP and Colin Meloy  {#Clap}

I really don't like this song at all, but I do have to agree with the sentiment that much of the strength of this station is derived from Bill's refusal to exclusively cater to the "numerical will of the masses."

I'll take the "We Both Go Down Together," as well as the occasional "Dengue Fever - Seeing Hands," and all the other things that I legitimately don't enjoy because for every one song I haven't liked, Bill has played about 50 that I do.  {#Group-hug}

I think you're in the wrong comment thread.  This is neither.

a song like this makes me think I could actually play guitar and sing too... and I have ZERO musical talent.
I really dig this one.  Love a good new song.
It's not as good as the full band version, but this is such a great song I'm happy to get whatever I can of it...
MAAAHAI again and again

I'm not a Decemberists fan, but I really like this. 8

Oh. Would you like for me to upload something from "God Bless Tiny Tim"?

Please, please stop playing this song.
Not my favorite Decemberists song, but I really enjoy his solo stuff.  I once road-tripped with four friends to see him perform four hours away and it was fantastic - a very casual, intimate show in which Colin sipped red wine, told stories, and just generally enjoyed himself with the audience.  The opener was also excellent - a woman named Laura Gibson, with quiet, pleasant songs.  I ended up buying her album...wonder if anyone's uploaded it?

True, he's got that Irish nasal bleat down just right, in a bad way...

Wow, I dislike this song, but not nearly as much as Excelsior. This guy hates this song more than Essextex (my nemesis) hates David Bowie.

Oh, the song does really bite. And I've learned to tolerate The Decemberists, mostly due to support from Deadwing, my dear Porcupine Tree friend.

Really good song. Like Meloys work. Check out "The Decemberists" too where Colin Meloy is lead singer.

Nah {#Think}

Dear God, what have we done to deserve having this song inflicted upon us SO OFTEN??  {#Frustrated}

This song gets a solid 1.
I like this tune, I do, but hearing it often is not a good thing . . .  {#Headache}
You are so right it is depressing,,,,to hear mahaaaaii

I have to agree.  I'm not one to post negative comments about the music, but the combination of his terrible, vibrato-heavy voice and the heavy airplay leads me to make an exception.
Ma-hiiiiiii rating is a 2.
it's depressing love song day  !!!

My lunch comes up.

He rhymes like Steve Miller. Abra-cadabra.
That's because you've never been on the vast veranda with Miranda.

I disagree.

6 => 7

I agree.  So much negativity.  A good song. I enjoyed it; such a shame to hear so much criticism!

What a bunch of miserable gits you all are! Relentlessly slagging comments without a positive sentiment in sight. Maybe I'm just a pervert, but I quite like this effort, including the vibrato. How anyone can reckon he sounds like Tiny Tim I don't know - that's at least two octaves above this guy. I would give it 7, but as a corrective to all the negativity on here it's 8 from the Nottingham jury.

I don't know if I can bear to hear this song again...ever...

Gave him an extra point for jumping off a cliff after writing this dreck.
Jesus, this again?

I like him.  I like them.  I find their stuff theatrical.  His voice to me is like an aural version of an Edward Goery illustrated macabre tale.  And I mean that complimentarily
Again?????  My ears can't take this anymore!!       {#Yell}
Is he standing on some sort of vibrating platform while he's singing?
This would be somewhat tolerable with Morrisey singing it. This guy's trilling voice reminds me of Tiny Tim.

Not again....
MUTE! Ahhhh. That's better.
Wow, this sucks even more than The Decemberists.
Do not soil the cranberries with comparisons to this! He's a durian fruit!
Ando...ma-ha-hi luv, ma-ha-hi luv....

Pass.

This guy should do a duet with Ozzy.

MmmmmmmHaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
He reminds me of the Cranberries.
This sucks.

a vast veranda

This is the kind of song that sounds ok if you hear it occasionally... like once a month.

Once a DAY, however, drives it to intolerable levels.
Every time I hear this song I am tempted to break my rule of not ranking anything that rates below an 8. But no, I will be strong, and not bust out my first 1. I also debate whether or not to make repeated negative comments about it, but honestly in the end it's not worthy of creating such a sense of inner conflict. It just plain sucks. There, I did it. It's horrible. HORRIBLE! Ahh, that's better. I wish I could tell this guy where to stick his vast veranda.

Is he kidding with the "wait for it" crap? Please.
For as much as I love the Decemberists' latest album, this album gives me the creeps, and Colin doing it solo doesn't make it any better.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So I'm guessing that this is the decemberist guy... won't bother to look it up. This is marginally better than the other version - it gets a solid 2, just because it's 12% less whiney than the other one. Where is physicsgenius when we need him?

Ok, this song is good but not NEARLY good enough to get the amounts of (over)play that it does.

6 —> 5.

What a hoot! We got a good laugh at the dinner table. He sounds like a billy goat.

I wonder if an alternative title for this might be "69" ;-). Well, it is Friday after all... Innuendo aside, a nice song - 7 from the Nottingham jury. 1 of those points is for finding a rhyme to "veranda" :o)
allmusic.com says that he "has fronted three bands, Happy Cactus, Tarkio, and the Decemberists." This is why I was sure that it was the Decemberists singing before I looked at the playlist. Hm, seems nice.
seems like any word that ends with a vowel gets twisted by M. Meloy. it's the only thing that spoils the Decemberists for me.
soundproof studio ... not as such! Woof indeed
Woof!
I like the Decemberists, but I do believe this verges on self-parody. (Pondering) Did I just state something obvious?

actually he may be laughing. sounds like it when he is saying "my love" or whatever the hell he is saying, sounds like he is trying to hold it back.
