Stop it!! THE Phish? I'm gonna hafta check that out! Not a big Phish fan but, anything I HAVE heard from them, I enjoy! As, I'm sure I will like their version too!

There's a lot people don't recall about the 70s. The decade which saw the 60s go mainstream also gave rise to awesome RnB, Funk, Disco, Metal, Prog Punk and Jazz Fusion. Much of that fusion is now derisively referred to as Fuzak (Kenny G, David Sanborn,Deodato, Chuck Mangione) but some of it was brilliant (Mahavishnu,  Miles, Weather Report, Tony Williams, Chick Corea)  and is rarely ever heard these days.

And, it's really sad that it's as you say. This Sprach, for instance, is a really "uplifting" kind of composition! Masterfully done and, a real "eargasm" to listen to! I'm a thru and thru Rock&Roller but, pieces like this, I'll "pause" the Zeppelin to listen to, start to finish!

Much of which 104.1, WBCN, The Rock of Boston played throughout its 43 year history during which it stuck (mostly) to its rock-based yet eclectic roots and none of which you'll ever hear on Classic Rock stations. I remember Eric Jackson playing "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" in its entirety on the overnight around the time of "2001: A Space Odyssey" for instance. Lots of country too, like Willie and Merle. Musical diversity the likes of which we only hear on gems like Radio Paradise today, not on the most popular FM station in a major metropolitan city.
I can't hear this song without thinking of the movie Being There. It was a perfect soundtrack for watching Chauncy Gardener take his first steps down the stairs of the building he spent the majority of his life in, evicted and on his way to nowhere in particular, confronting the cold, cruel world for the first time in his adult life. He did okay for himself, though.
doesnt this border on being cheesy?

Strauss
Phish does a great job with this song live.
Derivative, obviously, and not much originality added. Is the bass supposed to sound sharp?
Repeating the other's comment... PLEASE ADD MORE!

"Some of it was brilliant" unlike the actual successful trash of that talentless hacks like David Sandborn? Lol Condescend much?
Is that a photo of Paul Rudd?

This is used to such wonderful effect in “Being There,” the last great Peter Sellers movie.

Still do.
This is 20 out of 10. Exceptional.
For this is the reason I  partake in my growing share of quality time with the incomparable RP.
Love to y'all that agree and are also beneficially moved.

Haters can dispense and slither away, lol

Just watched the Miles documentary “Birth of Cool” and binged listened Bitches Brew. It echoes.
I believe in Peter Schickele's measurement for music: "If it sounds good, it is good."
just wonderful music, so much beautiful sound.
it Kills you solftly the right way for a good journey to the gods
I smell K-Tel...
I might almost prefer this version.
Phish also does a very funky version of this live!
This has no business being this awesome.

It's kind of amusing to picture this as a light instrumental track from KC & The Sunshine Band.

BTW, Space Dust is another good one from Deodato.  The whole range of light jazz from the late 1970s is an interesting genre... RP should play more of it.

See also "Joy" by Apollo 100, which is a super-upbeat rendition of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" from J. S. Bach.
Trying to get a deejay to play this in the skating rink was BLOODY IMPOSSIBLE.

How are you doing now, 13 years later?
Cheese factor? Yes, but this is fun because Strauss' composition is so fundamentally good.

No comparation between mangione or g. benson and the mastering og Miles or John M. Uno jugaban a tocar bonito y mal btw. Otros eran virtuosos.  I think Deodato ranks in the middle

You from Wisconsin?
Love this (and Being There), just ordered the vinyl off Discogs, OMG this station is costing me so much money....
Phish does a version of this in a similar jazzy style.
The 9 minute version is a bit much, I prefer the radio edit, and then only once every 5 years or so
I wonder how a segue to "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk would sound...
This still works. On the other hand, Synergy / Larry Fast has not stood the test of time for me.

(I sought out Synergy recently to see if the music was as good as I remember. Alas.)

Jazz is a form of music barely suitable for an elevator now? Huh.  This album is a classic. The lineup is incredible!
This seems like it was fun to record.
Still sounds great...

It's playing while Chance is looking into the TV shop window which has been dressed a lot like 2001.

Probably my favourite film.
Surprisingly, this song hit number 2 on the
Billboard Hot 100 in early 1973. It featured jazz
luminaries like Stanely Clarke and Billy Cobham,
This is like 12 minutes too short.
BRAZIL ROCKS!! THAT'S MY MUSICAL COUNTRY. WE HAVE THE BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD!! AMERICA, AFRICA, ASIA AND EUROPE IN ONE COUNTRY - LIKE USA, BUT EVEN BETTER - OR DIFFERENT, AT LEAST. PLEASE, PLAY MORE BRAZILIAN SONGS
Wasn't this song on the soundtrack to "Being There"?
Feelin' da funk
A touch of Miles' Bitches Brew in the mix...
Listen to the Phish version some time, very solid!
I just watched this for 8 minutes and 9 seconds.

It's like a showing of a classic science fiction film in the SNL lounge with Bill Murray . . . but this time he's not singing Star Wars . .
Nothin like the original.  Literally and actually true.
Don't you just love the sound of a Fender Rhodes? Great track
Bombastic funk!

What's not to like?
Good musicianship, but the original is more powerful.
I was 7 when this one came out. It really takes me back to my childhood. Not the greatest thing on earth, but certainly good enough to bring the memories of a nice period.
Billy Cobham on drums! Along with several other monsters!

Deodato = Kenny G or Chuck Mangione?? Wrong.
An album with Ron Carter, Stanley Clarke, Billy Cobham, Airto Moreira, Hubert Laws, John Tropea and others greats, certainly, can not be called Fuzak (the elevator music)
On this day, 50 years ago, Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

Thank you, Bill, Rebecca, and the RP crew, for this timely airing!
I bought this as a 7 inch single.  I was 14. I thought I was soooooooo cool.

A classic cover of the theme of a movie that influenced our culture in multiple ways, including anticipating our conundrum about artificial intelligence. Some would say that we don't display superior intellect, given our destruction of the very environment that enables us to live and thrive. Thus sprach zarathustra.
Dig that crazy tambourine, man.
What would follow really well on this song would be a "Fifth of Beethoven" [sic]
My God, it's full of cheese!
Blimey.

He's got an armadillo in his trousers!
Yet another tune that had completely slipped from my readily accessible memory bank.
Sort of feels like getting reacquainted with a long lost friend!
Once again - Thank you B&R!
Deodato flat nailed this one.
This is quite fun and hip, and enjoyable, but not a patch on the orchestral original IMO, which I first heard as a kid watching Kubrick's 2001. Needs more timpani... ;-)

Is it me, or does yer man Deodato have a Mars Bar in his trews?
No better way to end up in traffic jam then with this !
   Fender Rhodes-tastic!
I was just reading a news article about the Apollo 8 (manned) mission that orbited the moon 50 years ago today ... I couldn't have wished for a better soundtrack!
Yea Foo!!
Is it OK I am playing 'Air Shakey Egg'?
Kinda like Sticky Fingers, those jeans don't leave much to the imagination, and yes, I'm married to a beautiful redhead woman and I don't swing that way. Just say'in, before my time!
Haha! Used to play this as an intro when I was was a mobile DJ while I was getting everything lined up for the night ahead and before I kicked everything off.

So. . . for me . . . this holds some solid memories of wonderful  times Waaaaaaaaaaay back in my past.

Marvellous

To me it sounds exactly like the mid-1970s, especially electric piano and the rest of the instrumentation.  That's not a knock on it, just an observation.  Nice guitar work.

This song captures the 70's. Good, bad or indifferent.
Wow, I haven't heard this in *checks the date of release* OMG it's been that long?
One more 10!
This tune seems way before its time.
Orchestra + Fender Rhodes + guitar + drums + percussion + Eumir Deodato = 10.

Thank You, Bill. The 70's never sounded so good. Playing the long version is what fm radio rarely understood. Well, until programming  managers starting butting in on the dj playlist process.
As soon as I heard the first few notes I got a great big smile on my face. Doing a little chair dancing. Great blast from the past.
