What the heck is it about Spirit's music that makes it just as wonderful today as it was in the seventies?  .....

I've wondered that a lot myself.  Here's the best I can figure:
   1) well-crafted melodies and harmonies (good tunes)
   2) cogent or witty lyrics, sometimes both
   3) highly-produced recordings: multitracking, backing vocals balanced well, apropos background noises (Fresh Garbage, Mr. Skin) that aren't too loud, clean instument tracks, clear vocal tracks
   4) their songs have a great beat and I can dance to them

Some of their stuff sounds so fresh, it could have been recorded last month.

PS to sir242 below: I would say these guys are anti-glam — except of course, for the psychedelics.

Brilliant observations unclehud, cheers!  (mine's a merlot not the chardonnay Cynaera mentioned  : )   "glugga glugga"

Will Salute this fine Spirit and raise my goblet high Cheers!!!{#Cheers}
Outstanding Spirit  : )

A great feel good number. Can't not tap your toes. Definitely of its era in a good way!
one of the most underrated bands of the 20th century
Spirit, reminds me of college in th 70s, great group.
Finally! Something to overcome four drearily boring songs in a row (which is highly unusual in my experience with RP).

Love this whole album.  Still play it.

{#Lol} I wonder what Dr. Sandwich dreams about.
"Love Will Find a Way" still my favorite on this album - overall the album is a 10.

Good description.  I must have missed this one back in the day.

Seems to me this album was full of 8's and 9's, but overall it was and is still a 10 to me. Somehow, it just all came together and flowed so well. And now, sadly, 60% of the original band is no longer with us.
This is one of the most under rated albums of the '70s. Very original music, well produced and still sounds good today!!
Lots of style points and technical execution.  Serious pop that apparently was too serious.  Love it, love it, love it.
Love this song/album.  Headphones on turntable revolving and me lying awake in the freshmen dorm.
Throwin' some love Spirit's way on this rainy Sunday afternoon!

Brass kicks ass!!

At first listen, most of this song is kind of ho-hum to me, but the chorus is killer. The song gives me hints that I would REALLY like the album. The influences on the Glam period to come are obvious, and that alone makes me want to pick up this album and give it a serious listen. Plus, there's the whole Bauhaus tie-in. Thanks for playing this, guys. It's a reminder that I've needed for a long time.

Damn, even the straight glam rock tunes on this album are great.

In '68 Spirit was backed on tour by Led Zeppelin. Many accounts cite that, in creating Stairway To Heaven, the Zep's Jimmy Page borrowed the key riff from Spirit's Taurus—charges that Page denies. California ultimately penned all of Spirit's hits, including I Got A Line On You, 1984 and Nature's Way.

More....

If I was only back in those days!!

This is a fabulous album, though this, perhaps, is not the best song on it.  I do like the horns, though ...

These guys must have had some influence on Super Furry Animals.

what's wrong with horns?   i think the arrangements of the 70's were great.  what a time of diversity in music!!  the 80's and 90's pale in comparison.
This album gets a lot of play here. Perhaps someone should start a forum thread that wonders "Does Spirit Contribute a Lot of $$ to RP?" {#Wink}
Ah, the obligatory early-70s horn section...
Oh, Lord, it was fun to be young and hot-blooded and sing along with this one, loud.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the chance to lay down a good baseline for the people in the office next door.
Love - Love this album...brings back memories! Thanks Bill..

A great concert (1969) it was! Poster reprints

I remember seeing these guys on tour promoting this album. They were the opening act for The Moody Blues no less. As good as they were in the studio, their live performance was amazing. After the second encore, an MC said we had to move on or there wouldn't be time for the Moodies.

(By the way, for all of us Moody Blues fans, the rest of the universe paled when the Moodies started their first set.)

Got to see Spirit on tour for this album at the North Miami Beach Jai Lai Fronton winter of 1970.  The Allman Bros opened.  One of the best concerts I have ever been to.  And what a venue, the acoustics were so different from anyplace indoors I had been before.

{#Smile}
This along with The Family that Plays Together were outstanding records by what was a great band in its day. Great to hear this little gem.
Good band/LP...but no "Forever Changes" or "Odyssey and Oracle"  Those are the 2 great under-appreciated 60's iconic records

I'll take some of that!

I won't dispute their talent as performers or the importance of their influence on other bands but to my ear Spirit has not aged as well as others.  From that era, give me Traffic or CCR any day.  I listened to them in the '70s (I'm 50) but Spirit sounds like self indulgent hippie music to me now.

There is no song on this album that I would rate lower than a 9. I consider it to be a front runner in the greatest album of all time sweepstakes. There's really been nothing like it before or after. I'd love it if Bill played the whole thing from start to finish.

Agreed!
I think Clear was better.....

So true Rob, couldn't agree more. Gotta love RP for playing it!
Glad to see these guys in the rotation, Bill - 12 Dreams is a classic from start to finish! And Randy California was a supremely under-rated guitarist! RIP, Randy

At least one space/time continuum law broken there. Spirit was a great band, and an offshoot of theirs, Jo Jo Gunne, had its moments too.

Have you any idea just how old this album is? If anyone was ripped off (we call it influence) it was these guys, one of THE seminal rock groups.
I was 2 when this came out . . . I guess I can be excused for never hearing it before.
Circa 1970 - might this have been the inspiration for Roxy Music?
